Ford 1720 Ignition switch

i am trying to locate a website or somewhere that i can order a replacement ignition switch for my 1720. local tractor parts store wants 124.21 for swith with wiring harness and 123.21 with out wireing harnes....YES i know makes no sense at all.

I have found tons of switched on the net for 34-42 but they dont list that it is compatiable with my model.

is there a standard switch that will go on all Ford diesel tractors?

your local napa store should be able to supply this all you need to know is how many spades are plugged into it most have any where from three to five spades should be less than $30.00 and no wiring harness needed.

I need one for a 1920, NH quoted price of $147.90 - !!! Napa has a five-terminal four-position (Accessory, Off, Run, Start) that sounds like a match, for $23. I'm headed there tomorrow.

It's highly doubtful the NAPA switch has the amperage rating required to reliably carry the glowplug current over the long term. But it will only cost $23 to find out.

You can purchase aftermarket Ford tractor 4 position switches w/2 keys for about $20 including shipping on ebay from a number of sellers. The "accessory" position is supposedly designed for glow plug use. I purchased one and ended up giving it to a coworker for his tractor about two yrs ago and it's worked fine.

going with what rick said, I'd offload that glow plug current to a 10$ generic 3 or 4 terminal 'hot' on starter relay.

take 1 extra piece of wire and would for sure carry the amps..

Local Napa did NOT have a 5-terminal, 4-position switch. Best they could do was a 4-terminal 4-position.

There are 2 wires for the glow plugs - both black with white stripe - and both terminals connect to a single position in the switch. These go hot when the switch is turned back for "glow," and also when the switch is turned forward for "Start." I suspect RickB is right again, if I connected both wires to the Acc position on a regular Napa switch it would burn it up sooner or later.

I live in a mild climate, and have never needed the glow plug warmup option. Soundguy, do I understand correctly, you could offload both glow plug wires to a normally-open relay, and run the starter wire to that relay in order to close it?

In any case, I'm ordering an aftermarket switch. $14.50 from TractorPartsInc.com... How does NH justify 10X that price???

the connection on the switch that would normally power the glow, instead powers the field on the NO relay.. the relay has one side of it's load connected to the glow ckt, and the other side to bat. one side of the relay field is grounded, the other side is activated by the key switch in the 'glow' or whatever position(s) you assigned it to..
