I tore the tractor down about a year ago and rebuilt it. I just got it all back together and pushed the clutch in and tried to get it into gear. All it would do is grind. I looked through the access hole on the side of the bell housing and the throw out bearing was not coming in contact with the pressure plate. I adjusted the pedal up and down and it made no difference. I made a make shift adjusting rod that was much shorter than the stock one and now the bearing rests on the pressure plate which I know is wrong, but how in the world does this get so out of wack? It is a new pressure plate, clutch, bearing(s). I am at a total loss and about ready to scrap the whole thing, any ideas??

Either the spacers are still in the pressure plate that it comes with to facilitate assembly, but they sould have fallen out when you bolted it to the flywheel or the pressure plate is out of adjustment. When the pressure plate is installed, the finger height or the adjusting screws are supposed to be checked for correct height, but no one does it as it is assumed that the clutch is adjusted from the manufacturer. 99% of the time, it is correct, but...... You can look at the clutch from the inspection hole in the side, but it is very difficult to adjust from outside.

We just got a new clutch for our MF 240. It is a "double" type clutch where the PTO and transmission clutch are one unit. That means it has a disk "sandwiched" in the middle. To help keep everything together while mounting these come with additional bolts installed to hold that inner plate in place. These bolts MUST be removed during the installation process.

Is it possible yours came the same way and you left these bolts in the clutch?

Could the fork assembly that pushes in the pressure plate some how have gotten out of adjustment? I didnt see any spacers when installed. This isnt the first clutch ive done in this tractor. Im baffled

Anything is possible. If it is a double clutch, the fingers are probably out if adjustment. Other possibilities are the throwout bearing sleeve is out of position or the throwout fork rollpins have sheared causing the throwout fork to be ineffective.

I think that I am leaning towards the roll pins have broken off and the fork has rolled on the shaft just the slightest bit
