The PTO on my 1710 does not disconnect when the clutch is depressed. I got the tractor used and don't know if it has a dual action clutch, but no matter the adjustments I can not get the PTO to stop turning except to release the engagement lever. The transmission shifts fine, even from forward to reverse without grinding while the PTO turns merily along. There is no 'jumping' when changing gears and the clutch is smooth and positive. Any ideas?

My thoughts are that it has a dual action clutch and maybe the PTO clutch plates are forzen together. I hooked up a bushog and ran it vigorously cutting 4 acres thinking maybe that might free it up, but no dice. If that is indeed the case, any solution short of spliting the tractor?

On a side note, does anybody know if the oil reservoir on the front diff are common with the finaL gear reduction cases on the front wheels?

I think on many live PTOs on Fords/New Hollands, the PTO lever is the only means of starting/stopping the PTO. That's the way it is on my tractor. My tractor has a hydraulic clutch/brake that is actuated by the lever and is completely independent of the transmission. I don't even have a transmission clutch on my HST model.

Thanks jinman, my new tractor has that type of setup. This old Ford however is gear driven and the engagement lever makes a physical gear mesh. The foot clutch should stop the PTO no matter what but for reasons I don't know it doesn't. I have a sinking feeling I'm gonna need a new clutch.

I'm not up on the 1710.. but um.. are you sure it is not an independent pto???

My 7610s has independent pto.. and is a gear unit. Engine clutch has -0- effect on pto. PTO is SOLELY controlled by the engage/disengage lever by my left foot.

Man now you have me wondering. The operators manual makes no mention of an independent PTO, and I didn't see any pedals, but I'm gonna look again. All I can see is the one lever on the left side under the seat and hear gears grinding when I try to engage it with the engine running.

Your 1710 has a dual stage clutch. And as you suspect, the PTO stage is inoperative. If it had the single clutch option, the PTO would stop at tha same time you can shift the transmission. No 1710's had independent PTO. You can remove the loader supports(assuming it has a loader), remove a rubber plug from the bellhousing side and adjust the internal clutch linkage in 3 places around the circumference of the pressure plate and POSSIBLY get PTO clutch function back. Transmission clutch disc wear throws the PTO linkage out of whack, effectively preventing the PTO disc from unloading. There is a specified clearance between 3 bolt heads and the pads they push on. I will try to remember to look up the spec tomorrow.

RickB, many thanks for the info. It sure makes me feel a lot better knowing at least there is a chance that an adjustment will cure the problem. I can see the rubber plugs you mention. I'm going to get a service manual before I remove the loader frame, unless you know what the clearance specs are in which case I'll proceed without buying one, It can't be too complicated. One good thing is that the machine will still be operational so as the adjustments are made I can start it up and check to see how it works.

As a matter of interest, this machone has 1650 hrs, all of which was spent doing light duty chores on a horse ranch, like moving bales of hay etc. Its in remarkably good condition with no signs of abuse. That makes me feel better that an adjustment just may work.

Thanks again

Frank
