Careful on this point because it may be changing in the near future. I've made a couple comments in other recent posts about this issue. I've been a Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic user for years, but I've noticed that the last gas engine rating for it was SM. All the current stock does not have an API S* rating. Now Rotella T6 comes in two types; the older traditional type that we're accustomed to, and a new 5W-30 Multi-Vehicle type that does have an API CK-4/SN rating. I know that Delo and Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel oils are carrying an SN rating also.
A quote from the Rotella T6 Multi-Vehicle sales brochure:
GENTLE ENOUGH FOR GASOLINE ENGINES,
WITHOUT SACRIFICING PROTECTION IN DIESELS.
In order for a diesel engine oil to meet API SN, Shell
ROTELLA T6 Multi-Vehicle 5W-30 is blended with lower
levels of phosphorous so it doesn't damage catalyst
systems in gasoline engines. Even still, Shell ROTELLA
T6 Multi-Vehicle 5W-30 Full Synthetic has demonstrated
excellent wear protection over millions of miles of testing
in heavy duty diesel engines.
