Ford 1710
I have a ford 1710 4x4 with power steering that I just recently bought and I have been fixing it up. The final problem that I have been having is that the clutch will not disengage to all the higher gears to be used. I have Shifted the tractor into gear 6 with ease but anything higher causes a grinding noise and will not pop into gear. I have been using brake cleaner. I have also been trying to put stress on the transmission by having the tractor push a tree and pull a tree. I have also tried to separate the clutch using a screw driver. I was thinking about trying a little wd40 to see if that would help but the tractor has a dry clutch. Any advice?

I have a 1710 myself it is a great tractor. Are you trying to get into higher gear at dead stop or shifting on the go ? This is not a synchronized transmission and it takes just the right ground speed, rpm combo to shift on the go.

I know that but the issue is the clutch will not disengage so there is a grinding noise that occurs. The clutch is rusted together and looking for ideas how to get them appart.

1. Place a safety chain onto the tractor and a stationary object.
2. Jack up the rear and place car ramps under the rear tire about half way up. Orient them as if you were going down hill.
3. Put the tractor into its highest gear.
4. Prop the clutch in with a 2 X 4.
5. Let stand over night.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for the idea. I will try this tomorrow. Would a little bit of wd-40 help the situation as well?

Using WD-40 on your clutch would be a bad idea.

You should not slam you tractor into gear without a clutch any more. Your problems are minor compared to snapping a tooth off a gear.

It has been my experience that stuck clutches are more likely to lose their bond when the force applied is in the opposite direction that the engine normally applies.

Oh ok. Thank you for all the advise. I have been told to use brake cleaner on it. I am sure that one of the clutches is free so the lower gears are fine. It is the upper gears that I am having a problem with now.

Is it possible for you to stop the tractor in 1st gear with the clutch depressed without stalling the engine?

Yes. I can do that for the first six gears. It is the next six that are having trouble.

Your clutch disc is not stuck. It appears to be out of adjustment.

There is only one clutch for your transmission the other is for your PTO.
