Hi All!

So, New tractor, replaced the clutch, got the loader back on and hooked up the battery backwards (oops!).

Let the smoke out of the alternator, so bought a new one. Replaced the mechanical regulator for a solid state one, and replaced the battery for kicks all at the same time.

The red battery light on the dash is on when I have the engine running (Not charging), and voltage at the battery is the same as it is when it is off, so definitely not charging.

I'm not exactly sure where to go next. I bought a second alternator thinking that was the issue, but nope, that didn't make a difference.

I installed a battery cutoff switch in the dash so I can at least stop the draining issue (sort of), but if I can get the alternator to push charge into the battery, I don't have to really worry about the drain.

One last thing, the dash does get pretty warm (regulator heating up I think), but no smoke.

Any thoughts on what to try next?

I had a Ford1900 and replaced the regulator with a 280z Electronic one. I did wire it up correctly and all worked well. My guess is that you fried it. Mine never got warm. Just worked. If the light is on you got something broken. Most likely due to wiring things up wrong. I'd try another regulator.

You replaced a clutch on a new tractor? Connected the battery backwards? Probably fried a new alternator and/or regulator? Man, what's it take for you to swallow a little pride and take the tractor to a mechanic? :rolleyes:

Seriously, take the tractor to a dealer before you burn the barn down. :laughing:

Take the alternator to any friendly auto parts store and they can test it for free. They'll point out the proper connections just to be sure it's connected properly.

My local Advance Auto must have had a newbie guy testing starters. I took my Ford 1720 starter and Advance battery in to test. He didn’t know where to hook up the Ignition wire to the starter solenoid (mounted on the starter!). Just saying.... verify what the auto parts store guys tell you.

I actually have the wiring diagram, so I'm pretty confident the issues' either with the regulator, switch, or wiring somewhere inbetween... gonna pop off the fuel tank this weekend and replace the reg and test the wiring. maybe replace the switch too...

replace alll the things!!!:cool2::cool2::cool2:
