Ok, I feel dumb asking but......here goes. I just bought a ford 1510 and am getting to know her. There is a petal on the right side under the seat, directly behind the brake petal. Can someone tell me what it does. I brush hogged with the tractor last week and just noticed the petal. Thanks, Gary

I'm not familiar with your tractor model, but that sounds to me like the differential lock pedal.

Thanks. That makes sense. What would you use it for? I have used a very simple ford 9N for the last 10 years so I am not familiar with it.

Correct.
What would you use it for?
Makes both rear tires (and seems to impact on the front tires on MFWD models) turn together regardless of one having better traction than the other. On some tractors it's okay to depress the diff lock while one wheel is spinning at a different RPM than the other, on others it's not as damage to the internals will occur. So far I've heard it is,and it isn't okay to do this on the 100 series Fords. Until I find unequivocal proof, I'm sticking with stopping the tractor before engaging the Diff Lock.

I have a Mahindra Max25 hst 4wd. It has a similar pedal. When you're in a non-sticky situation, such as going uphill in snow/ice, or a muddy spot the pedal makes sure all four tires are locked and moving. Usually only two of the tires are driving the tractor.

Also if you are pulling something that will help you get started moving a little better. Think of it like an AWD drive car with the automatic slip control not working, but you have a button to get it into the 4WD mode.

From my manual:
"To operate the differential lock, depress and hold down the pedal until the lock is positively engaged. It is best to engage the differential lock while the wheels are turning slowly to minimize shock loads to the drive line. If a wheel spins at high speed, as on ice, reduce engine speed to idle before engaging the lock, or damage may occur. The differential lock is released by releasing the pedal."

After I released the pedal on my 2110 Ford it stayed locked until the engine RPM's slowed down and then it kicked out by itself.

Usually they stay locked until traction is regained and the torque on each wheel is equalized.

Locking the rear diff does not lock all four wheels together. It only locks the rear two. However, putting a tractor into 4WD on many brands of tractors creates four wheel braking since the front drive shaft runs off a clutch inside the rear end that is affected by the internal wet brakes.
