I am new to this forum and consider myself an average-Joe mechanic, but have little experience in entering the internals of a tractor. I think I have ran across some thread that mentioned this problem before, but the PTO on this 1500 will not stay engaged. Seems to me like the fix was a ball in the detent mechanism. A dealer quoted the previous owner something like $400 for the fix and told him "something is out of adjustment". If all it is is this detent ball that rests in the operating shaft....doses this sound like something the average-Joe could handle with a little help from folks on this forum?

Thanks for any help from anybody!

I would recommend you invest in a good shop manual. However, the I& T manual I have doe not have an adjustment procedure for PTO linkage that I could find:(

Does your PTO shift lever look like what I have below on my Ford 1700?

If so, You need to remove shift lever #1 by driving the pin out.You have to take #4 Guide bushing that exposes O ring #5. Then you can remove and inspect detent ball or spring #2. You might have out of round or damaged ball or broken spring. I was not able to find explicit directions for 1500 and have not done myself this particular inspection on my 1700. # 10 is PTO shift Fork and #8 is pto shifter ROD. I don't know if removing bushing #4 bolts allows you to retrieve the spring and ball without taking lever #1 off. from inspection of my oil level in the transmission the PTO mechanism might be fully or partially submerged in the oil. Might need to drain a little bit of oil for your inspection and put it back when you're done.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Unfortunately...the 1500 (1980 anyway) has the PTO shifter right between your legs at the very front of the seat...looks just like a regular shifter and it is not like the 1700....Which sounded and looked easy...just my luck.

I have the blow-up of the 1500 PTO engagement assembly and there is a spring-n-ball. The photo shows the exact reverse of what one may have in his mind. Looks to me like it shows the ball down in the cavity, then the spring....which makes no sense. In this fashion...the spring would touch the rod and not the ball!

I would be happy to send anyone interested a copy of the illustration and it seems like one could simply remove the plate...lift out the assembly and "there it is". The spring-n-ball illustration just doesn't make sense and could be drawn in reverse fashion....looks like if it just dropped down in the cavity spring-first then the ball would serve as a detent...the spring sure won't.

As suggested above...I will scoot on over in the New Holland section and see what I can scare-up. I am also interested in converting to an internally regulated (1-wire) alternator, which is possible...I just need to find out what alternator will bolt up, etc. to the brackets on the 1500.

You need to look at the picture closely, follow broken line and it shows two holes that the shifter rod moves front and back. The shifter rod assembly is below the detent ball and spring as it should be. once you take the cover off, the spring might pop up and there will be a ball in the hole matching the hole on the PTO shifter rod. You need to remove the PTO shifter cover and you're there. it should be quite simple. Don't disassemble anymore than you need, PTO cover is all you need.

JC.....that is what these forums are for. To have people like you help people like me extract their head out of their rear-end.

I went back last night before I went to bed and realized..."you big dummy (meaning ME)"...the shaft is below the hole and all I have to do is pull the cover and the cover is what holds the spring down over the ball...over the shaft. It ought to be right there like you say.

Thanks for moving the clouds out of my way!

This is one of those..."I wonder" sort of deals. I pulled the bolt that was suppose to hold the ball-n-spring in place and to my amazement.....NO SPRING. The ball was down in the hole, but the spring had gone missing. I suppose over time the parts had worn enough that the ball alone could no longer hold the shaft in the engaged position, but then I wondered...has anybody been in this thing before me. I purchased it used so that's very possible. I followed the tracks enough to see that the cover had been off before. Two thoughts came to mind. The person that had this apart and back together just forgot the spring...or...the little devil was down there under all that oil somewhere. I went fishing down in there and to my amazement.....found the spring.

Works perfectly now.

Hey Old,

As I was reading your update I was fixing to say "I bit you a $ the spring is in the oil and you need to go fishing for it. On 1700's stick shift there are 4 bolts than you can take out to retrieve the spring prior to cover removal.

I'm glad all is well and you got it working.
