Ford 1500
I am new to the forum. I just bought my first tractor: Ford 1500 (1979). I got a real good deal including several of attachments. Well I found out my why it was a good deal. The hydraulic pump is bad. It worked good enough when I tried the tractor I tested it so I bought the tractor. It is still a good deal if I can find a pump. Any one have one or a line on one?

Are you sure it is the pump and not a dirty screen/filter or low oil level or weak pressure valve. Could be just worn lift cylinder "O" ring.

I cleaned the screen, I rebuilt the pump (new seals), I had the pump volume tested - it's putting out 2 gallons per minute, should be 6.5 gpm.

I am not against ford but I bought the same part at Ford but after a week the pump has leak. I returned it and have a new one as a replacement but here it goes again the pump went really bad.

Did you check the pump gear and end clearance when you replaced the seals the pump?

Did not do this. Do you know what the clearance should be? And would this make a difference in the volume per minute that it would pump?

Excessive wear/clearance will allow oil to seep past and not be pumped as designed. How did you measure flow rate, was pump turning at the correct RPM?

If you rebuild the pump there is a "break-in procedure" with specified rpm for a period of time at no-load and progress to a pressurized for a specified time and test temperature to not exceed.

I would think that a pressure gauge would be a better method than flow rate.

The pump was "rebuilt" but had only the seals replaced. Did not have access to gears/bushings. When the seals were replaced the mechanic said that the original ones in it looked pretty good. I suspect the previous owner possibly replaced them prior to selling and found that it did'nt solve the problem and sold it.

Current update and problem. I found a new pump and when I went to install it I thought I would check the filter screen one more time. Now I had cleaned this prior to all my hydraulic problems and put in new fluid. But when I rechecked it it was pluged again (looked like silicone or something like it). I also noticed that the fluid at the screen was a dirty black color but that the fluid at the dip stick was still very clean. I cleaned and reassembled the screen and everything worked fine. I figured that when I had the volume testing done that they forced a plug somewhere to come free and it plugged the filter. I ran it about 4 hours and the problem reoccured. I took it apart again and again it was dirty. Cleaned it and it works fine. I had a fitting that I replaced and it leaked a little so I used silicone tape to seal it (still leaks). Could it be the tape getting sucked into the system? Is there a way to filter the whole system? Someone suggested that I should take the large tube that feeds the pump free and make sure that is clean. Any comments or suggestions?

Well, I took both tubes off, the pickup tube and the return tube, and they appeared to be unobstructed. I flushed them and put them back on. However, I think I found the problem though. The pipes had been taken off previously and the o-rings on the smaller pipe was replaced with smaller o-rings. It looks like they used silicon paste to hold them in place when installing, as there was some on all the o-rings, and maybe they intended to have the paste make up the difference in the smaller o-rings. I drained the hydraulic fluid out, it was pretty dirty even though it only had about 5 hours on it. It was suggested that I may have to drain it one more time.
