looking for info on how injection pumps work. last summer my ford 1300 started stalling or being fuel starved. i bled the injectors and got it running but it would soon quit again. i found the filter in the sediment bowl ,didn't have a new one so i blew thru it with my mouth cleaned the bowl, filled and reinstalled it and it started and ran fine for 3 or 4 days. ordered new filter and the other day it quit again, i figured time for the new filter. installed the new filter filled and reinstalled bowl, bled injectors but it won't run. it has tried to run a few times for a short while but won't keep running. i discovered it is not getting fuel to the front injector like the back one gets so i took the line off going from pump to that injector and when i spin it over it doesn't throw fuel out of the pump in that location. don't know a lot about those pumps is it possible for the pump to go bad on just one side? if so would it be possible to get it rebuilt? thank you in advance for any info, there are so many knowledgeable people on this site who take the time to help others. sincerely 01hunter570

1.. check the fuel flow AT THE INJ PUMP INLET..
2.. it’s possible that the “inards” on that cylinder
are sticking..
Do yourself a HUGE favor and don’t go into the pump.!!
Although it looks simple enough, there are gaskets and orings that need to be replaced when disturbed and tiny locating pins that WILL shear off if assembled incorrectly..
A 275.00 job can turn into a scrap heap of a tractor QUICK, if curiosity gets the best of u.!!
My suggestion would be to, check the fuel flow..& if that’s ok, pull the pump and send it to someone who won’t take advantage of you.

thank you for your reply. i will not take the pump apart, i know just enough about diesels to avoid that. i hesitate even taking the pump off. does the pump have to be timed when reinstalling ? i have a ford 555b and i have been told that pump needs to be timed when installed. i put some lucas diesel injector cleaner in the fuel yesterday if it is stuck maybe it will free it up but i'm usually not that lucky. thanks again for your reply.

Couple of thoughts:

Have you checked if there is a free flow of fuel coming from the tank to the fuel filter & injection pump by disconnecting the supply hose at the pump inlet?

The shutoff valve on the bottom of the tank may or may not have a strainer which could easily be clogged in an older tractor.

Also make sure the shutoff valve fully open.

I really like the Lucas Inj. Cleaner but I doubt that that it’ll cure the problem.??
Do the checks as stated in the above post..
To answer your question, the timing is done with shims UNDER the pump mounting flange..so be mindful of them.. u simply reuse the same ones..
If they’re stuck to the pump, leave them..I can get them off w/o bending them all to heck..
Keep at it. We’ll have this thing purring in no time..
DONT FORGET.. check the flow as stated above.!!
Good luck

If it isn't smoking, don't touch the pump.

Ford 555 has timing marks to line pump back up.

Additives work miracles these days. I have witnessed it. They have some at dealer called phaser? It works wonders.

I'm still running a 58 model diesel. May need a pump one day, but not yet.

Important item to check when injectors are not getting fuel is the delivery valve, located behind the large nut on each outlet. I think it's a 19mm bolt. The flange contains an o-ring that stays with the flange during removal. Behind that is a spring, then a plunger, and slotted piston inside the plunger. If this plunger is stuck, fuel cannot pass through. Remember there is a separate fuel delivery valve for each injector outlet. On the 1300, the fuel pump works off of the cam shift and does not have to be timed. The timing can be adjusted by adding shims between the pump housing and the engine case. Adding shims retards the timing closer to TDC, removing shims advances the timing further toward BDC. Shop manual page 56 explains this further in detail.

It's too bad the OP has not not given update, or replied much to our suggestions.
