For you golfnuts... my project

A friend and I got together and came up with a sort of plan... I had the property, he had the tractor... so... Southside Links Golf Course.
Thats the blog for the course I'm building witha Kubota 7510 fel/mower/blade/disc. A LOT of work for a little tractor, but my goodness, what a workhorse!. We'll pull off the implements when we're done and let it just tow a gang mower for it's retirement.
I had a putting green for a few years, but it wasn't enough for me, so ... here I am.

I've thought about putting in greens in our fields... but for now I just whack them as far as they can fly... surprised at how many we find just walling in the woods

Apparently there are not a slew of golf nuts on this board. I too have often imagined creating my own course. The scope of the work seemed daunting however, and I elected to hop in the truck and drive a couple miles to the local course. I never imagined what it would be like with no courses around.
My hat is off to you and your friends, that is one heck of a lot of work. I'll keep checking your progress.

Southside, I have been in the golf maintenance business for 15 years. I have been involved in major renovations in the past so I can vouch for the hard work, many hours, and labor of love(no one does it for the money because there's not much in it). Even though I'm in Alabama, we also have bentgrass(greens anyway). If you need anything I may be able to help you with, feel free to fire away with any questions. Except about playing. I stink and don't really like it. :laughing:

A couple of years ago I read about some guy on the CA coast, near Pebble Beach, who had put in a few golf holes on his property. Turns out he never got a permit and when the powers-that-be found out from an aerial photo, they made him rip them out...

Of course this could be just CA idiocy, which I have fought for most of my life.

Great project, I have dreamed of doing it, if I had the property, the money, the time, ......
There's a farmer in my county that did this years ago, and turned his farm into a golf course.

CurlyDave, We have a bit of a microclimate here at the lakeside (a zone and a half to two zones higher) and I was able to establish a very healthy putting practice green a few years back and without too much work. The hybrids of bentgrass available these days is staggering. The seed I used to grow the practice green were developed for Alasakan conditions. (Universtiy of Manitoba project, I think.)
CosmoAU, I too, did a turn at course maintanence. It is a ton of work, but it's also a labor of love. I will make sure to keep you in the loop when the questions start popping up.

Looks to me that you really need to hit your irons with control. The terrain and layout is awesome. Like some others here, I too thought about having a few holes on my property. Problem is getting irrigation down to some of the areas. I'd be interested in what kind of seed you used for your practice green? I would need something that stands up to mild Winters (down to 15F) and for Hot Summers (up to 110F)
