Interesting article about an early Cummions engine I have had a couple of "old" Cummins engines under my belt. One was a 250 in a 63' White with the compression release. An even earlier model and I forget the specs was in a 59' White tractor that a contractor used to move his equipment. Then there was the 83' Case with a 108 hp naturaly apsirated diesel that I owned but sold to my neighbor when I moved. Man', I loved the feel of that engine, especially in a tractor where you are so up close and personal. The last Cummins powered truck I drove had a 435hp (mild) N14.

Whoever owned the truck must have put a newer cab on it. Looks like an early '50's IH cab. My '59 White 4400TD has an NH 220 Cummins in it. Dad put over 900,000 miles on this truck. The engine is painted the correct Cummins Old Gold.

I had a 170 cummins in a '65 White Constructor and a 400 big cam in a 88 Freightliner COE. I now have a 475 CAT. Never want another Cummins after the CAT.

I joined the workforce in 1984. Started at Saunders Truck Leasing. I can remember working "Shiny 290's"

And then along came the Formula 300. I could turn one of those up in the middle of the night with a handful of tools and a 2 cell flashlight.

I drove a couple of C15 powered trucks. One was a brand new 07' daycab rated only 435hp that would run terrible but throw no codes. Then, with a route change I was given a sleeper rated 465hp that had about 400k on it. It pulled pretty well but every now and then would make a loud noise like a piston knocking or something? It would do that idling or on the road. Great for sleeping with the engine running to keep warm.

I also drove a truck with a C7 pretty much previously known as a 3126 which was in a little FL70 I owned.

They just seemed to be high on the maintenance requirements to me.

Had a triple nickel in a tandem dump truck. WOW! That thing ran like a raped ape! Loaded you only needed the 4 out of in the main and only 2 out of 4 gears in the auxiliary. Certainly not like the gasser Fords I was used to running where you had to use them all.

First thought when reading the article was the irony that the truck was retrieved by a CAT powered loader.

I was always fond of Cummins till I got burned on a couple of ISX engines. I will never buy another Cummins again unless I am truly desperate and no other option.
