An old friend of mine had some wonderful stories and a few funny ones from his time in the RAN, he was a Commander when he retired but this story relates to when he was a Junior Officer.
The ship shall remain nameless to protect the guilty but it had returned to port and a celebration was afoot, the Navy Brass Band had been practicing but the Captain of the ship was not impressed that after a few pieces the bandsmen all opened the 'spit valves' on their instruments and dumped saliva all over the deck, not a problem, our illustrious Captain had a solution.
The big day arrived and all the dignitaries and their ladies were seated, all the Naval hierarchy were present and the Admiral was furious when in marched the brass band all with condoms hanging on the spit valves to capture the offensive saliva.
I don't know what happened but I believe that this was not a practice adopted at future events.
