Thanks to all for the advise regarding the best implement to use to scrape the manure mat from the barn. I hooked up a box scraper with the teeth fully extended and ran it through, but had about the same effect as a set of disk harrows. It took 3 hours by hand to clear about 4 square feet; I figured it'd take the entire Chinese army a month to finish the job.
So, I caved in and rented a skidsteer. Absolutely the best invention since sliced bread!!! Took me a day to clear everything out, but my back is in one piece and I've got a 8 ft. high wall of manure for the spreader. My next purchase will be a (used) skidsteer: can't imagine a more useful piece of equipment.
