Flow controls for Hydraulic Motor question

My experience is primarily with pneumatic actuators.
To slow them down we typically "meter out", that is, put the flow control on the return line to the valve.
Trying to slow down a snow blower chute turn hydraulic motor.

Is it proper to control the flow into each line, or out of each line. Thanks in advance.

Not so fast

In the hydraulic world there is a saying “when in doubt meter out”. Metering in lets an overrunning load overspeed the motor.

What is the application ? Fast ? Slow? Flywheel effect at all ? Propel where a vehicle needs speed control going down a hill ?

Many motors are bidirectional and backpressire up to the rated operating pressure doesn’t bother them at all.
