All:

Friend of mine suggests I flip my rear tires (turfs) to increase the stance on the tractor (4200). Are there any suggestions or BTDT's on this suggestion.

I do have a 60"MMM, so I think flipping the fronts may cause clearance issues when turning.

The wider the stance the better as far as I'm concerned. I hate that pucker facter on any kind of slope. I think all tractor designers were born in and had never lived outside of Kansas and must think the world is flat.

<ine are all out as far as they go. Its a huge help...

My property is in the mountains, and varies from almost flat, to too steep to drive up/down. I have my rear tires set as far out as they will go. It makes a big difference. When I got the tractor, they were set at the narrowest, didn't take long to scare all the liquids out of me.
I cannot flip the fronts out, cause I have oversize R-1s and they hit the front loader arms when the loaders down and they are turned all the way left or right.
Even with the fronts still set in, having the backs out makes a noticable difference on side slopes.
You might check to see if your mower will still cover your tracks if you change the rears, might or might not be important to you.

I can dig it,

If you had ag or industrial tires you would also have to swap them side to side when you flipped them to keep the tread in the right direction.. but a knobby turf or diamond tread won't matter.

I would imagine the rule of thumb is that you can't increase the stance on the front axle unless it's an ag tractor. Could be wrong though.

Does widening the fronts make any difference unless you exceed their ability to rock/pivot side-to-side?? (as in "hit the stops") I ahve heard this question raised before and quite honestly I am STIlLL not sure of the right answer!?? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Just wondering your opinions.

I don't think my little 8n, and 9n, and NAA are considered ag tractors.. but the manual shows how to flip the fronts and dish them out.. and even extend the front axle halves to get up to 76" on the front axle..
Also.. my modern NH 1920 says to reverse the fronts for more width on the 4wd models, and the 2 wd models can reverse the fronts, and get an optional longer front axle half.

Though I'm sure some manufacturers say you can't reverse the tires on their tractor.. I don't think it is a universal rule.

The only one i've actually seen that physically prevents you from doing it is a cub cadet.. and the wheel rims have notches that prevent you from flipping and attatching the rims in reverse dished out stance.. Lijke I say.. i'm sure it is a manufacturer to manufacturer rule...

The 'rare' 2WD versions of at least Deere CUTs have adjustable (square tube) front 'axles' much like traditional 'ag' tractors. Really wish they would put the 8-way adjustable front rims of appropriate size on the CUTs like the bigger MFWD utility tractors. Having 8-way rears with non-adjustable fronts is almost as useful as one hand clapping.

Yep.. I like the multi adjust and power adjust type rims, .. and having adjustable axles... not that I row crop or anything.. but lets you adjust for hills.. or different trailers.. etc.. nice to have the options anyway..
