Well it's fall and once again I have thousands of flies in the gable of my pole barn! They are just all up there buzzing around. They may find their way in the barn to stay warm.

Anyway I need them gone. Any suggestions on how to do this? Thank you!

Fly strips (lots of 'em)?

Hairspray and a lighter?

Oh wait, exorcism... ?

I don't know...

(There has to be some chemical you can spray the beams with that they would not like.)

I hate that, had similar in my garage. Thing sounded like it was possessed.

A permethrin spray should get rid of a lot of them. It also has a residual effect, so you only need to spray weekly or so.

I think all you can do is knock the population down while they are out and active, they do winter over.

Try hanging plastic bags filled with water and a couple pennies in each. Put em up all over where you can. Seen it work. Won't get rid of em all but you should notice a difference.

We have a big BBQ ribfest every summer the last week of June. Flies are always a big problem; Sharn Jean, who is a sucker for every snake oil salesman, started tacking these bags up around the deck. We had a short discussion on the subject, which left me in full retreat. Turns out I got the last word; this was the worst fly season we have ever had, and the water bags had about as much effect as a nice painting by Salvador Dali.

I was thinking about a "bug bomb" (set it off and disappear for whatever the label says) but I wonder if they are effective beyond 6-8ft. You can do a little research on it.

The area where the flies congregate.... Spray bifenthrin on the ceiling panel and beams..... The dried chemical will kill most insects... maybe flies... It's available on amazon.... Bifenthrin Information and Products .....

Bifenthrin is a broad spectrum insecticide, miticide, and termiticide labeled for over 72 different pests. Bifenthrin can be used against indoor and outdoor pests and for control of turf and ornamental pests.

He didn't mention the height of his building but spraying entails a ladder doesn't it? As long as the ladder is already out, I'd set a bug bomb on top of the ladder and let it go (keep an exit path and get out ASAP). Flies are easy if you can get at them.

Fly tape. Do a search on fly tape. It is a 1/4" wide strip of sticky tape. No pheremones. When the flys swarm in the spring and fall, pheremone traps don't seem to do much but the flys are attracted to the bright white and will readily land on fly tape. Just Google (or whatever browser you like) fly tape. Amazon and others carry it. No need to spray.
