left rear is leaking.....I had this thing stuck in the mud the last time it worked.....Is it conceivable that there is just crud in valve stem??????

Maybe. I'd check the valve stem area with soapy water or store-bought leak detection fluid.

give a shot of air to the tire to get it pumped up, then wet the stem to see bubbles. if none, wet around bead. as said. a lil soapy water in a squirt or spray bottle helps.
many tiems these are tubed tires anyway.. so a leak OTHER than the stem means you need to break it down to patch / repalce tube, and celan up rim, etc.
