I have just purchased a YM1820D with 540 hours on it. When I accelerate, the Temp guage flashes. When I idle, it stays off. The radiator is not too hot, and is not over heating as far as I can tell.

I have ordered a manual, but want to make sure I am not doing damage to the engine in the mean time. Any ideas???

HK,
I live in Az and work my tractor in 100+ degrees. I've never had the temp light come on but occasionally check the eng. temp with an infrared temp gun. I keep it in the tool box. My 2000D consistantly runs 158 deg. regardless of the ambiant temp (I'm amazed at that, these YM's do very well in the heat).
You may have an intermitant short in the line or a weak ground. Clean up the connections first.
You can also purchase a radiator cap with integral gauge or use a simple cooking type thermometer (careful on opening the radiator though as opening the system will allow it to boil over a tad).
The infrared sensors are really ideal though for testing surface temp.

Thanks. I will look into that asap.

If your YM is like my F series, there is a low coolant sensor in the overflow bottle that illuminates the temp guage as well.

It could be as simple as you need to add coolant to the overflow bottle.

On rough ground my temp light flickers due to the overflow bottle being a tad low. Top it off and everything is fine.

Good pickup Gentry. I also thought he probably ment the light or sensor and not the gauge.

It threw me when I first got my F20D, and like allengentry the sensor in the coolant bottle was the culprit. Topped it off and twa.

Yep. The over flow bottle was the problem. Thanks for the help!

I was mowing the 4th and that same light kept flashing but the temp gauge was running cool. I filled the overflow bottle and the light went out. The next time I got on the tractor the light came on and stayed on. I filled the overflow bottle again and ran the tractor some more. When I stopped I checked and the bottle was low so I looked some more and found that I have a radiator leaking. So keep a close eye on your system until you are sure that all is well with it. big dan
