Hi all,

Amerigas is making the minimum propane purchase difficult. We need to buy 2 x water capacity to avoid the $177 yearly rental. If you dip below 20%, they can charge for a leak test. We use it for a gas fireplace only

I thinking about just buying my own tank and let them have their tank back. I have no doubt we will pay some fee for them to take the tank back. Sure would be nice to buy propane from any supplier....

menards has them for $711. The shipping weight is approx 300 lbs

Anyone use Flame King tanks?

If you purchase a tank get an ASTM and not a DOT tank

Sometimes, propane suppliers will sell you a tank (not a rental) and fill it for less than what you would pay for the tank elsewhere. Some require a contract but often, it's just 12 months. My neighbor got the best deal doing it this way.

He got sick of paying tank rental and dealing with the inflated propane prices at the company he uses. His in ground tank is 12 years old and when he told them to come and get it, they just gave it to him at no cost.

Same thing happened with our cheapo gas supplier. I simply bought a used 500 gallon tank, painted it up nice. Cost $250 if I recall. I ran their 500 gallon tank to 10 to 20%.

Picked up their tank with loader and moved it. Set my new/used tank in its place. Hooked up the original gas line and called for them to come and get their tank. They emptied theirs and filled mine with the same gas plus topped it off. I think there was a $25 leak test besides that. We use 100 gallons a year generally, and no way was I going to pay for two tanks of gas when I only used 100 gallons.

I still call them for a fill every year because they are the cheapest suppliers around anyway.

Here is one companys take on the issue and it seems to be the common one;

There are two kinds of vessels in which to store propane: DOT cylinders and ASME tanks. The best option for any given scenario will depend on a variety of factors, including your portability needs and anticipated fuel usage. Here, the knowledgeable team at Servco Oil & Propane in Wilton, CT, explains the major differences between the two.

DOT Cylinders

propane
DOT cylinders are those that meet the Department of Transportation’s specifications. These vessels are smaller than ASME tanks and are designed with portability in mind. For example, you might use a DOT cylinder to power your grill. Much larger DOT vessels might stay in one place because of their size, but they can still technically be relocated even when full. Because transporting propane poses certain risks, though, those who do so must follow specific regulations set forth by the DOT. They must also maintain their tanks, which means arranging for recertification 12 years after the original manufacture date and then every five years for the life of the vessel.

ASME Tanks

ASME tanks get their name from the American Society of Engineers. These vessels are designed for permanent installation on a property. Because they have thicker steel and are not exposed to the same hazards that mobile DOT cylinders are, recertification is not required. ASME tanks are measured in gallons. Common tank sizes range from 120 gallons to 2,000 gallons. The capacity of DOT cylinders, on the other hand, is measured in pounds of water. They might range in size from 5 pounds to 420 pounds.
If you need fuel for your ASME tank, turn to Servco Oil & Propane. This propane and heating oil supplier delivers to clients throughout Fairfield County. As a full-service HVAC contractor, they also offer installation, repairs, and maintenance to ensure your family stays comfortable all year long. Visit their website to learn more about scheduling propane delivery, or call (203) 762-7994 to discuss your needs before winter hits.

Looks like I could go with either. The DOT tank would have a limited life due to the number of recertification's allowed. I thought I read 3 recert's allowed.

I assume the ASME tanks cost more. The DOT tank was just $711.

When I converted from propane to natural gas last summer I sold my 500 gallon tank to the propane company for $800. They were going to recondition the tank and resell it. I would just see of a local company has a reconditioned tank for sale. That price seems steep for such a small tank.

Our Mom and Pop propane sources are going away due to age. Larger dealers will sometimes buy them out. Locally the spread between fossil fuels and electric for heat keep spreading. Hopefully in the USA we increase productivity so we avoid the European prices. At least we have gas and coal in the ground for heat and lights.

I bought a tank in Bloomington here, when they had a local operation:

I don't see that operation listed on their website but they still sell tanks and service our area.
