i'll be using an MX5100 KUBOTA to cut about 5 acres or so 4 times a year and maybe some other 5 acres on steeper ground twice a year. Might include some blackberry bushes and thicker bush once or twice and then just keeping grass down .

I vote for the Flail Mower. The rotary Cutter or Slasher hanging on the back of a tractor can get interesting at times. A Flail Mower gives in my opinion a better cut, does not throw items like a Slasher and is easier to maneuver into tight spots. Much safer in use on "steeper" ground also in my opinion.

I think it depends on how big the brush is and how tough a flail mower you would buy. I would opt for a heavy duty flail but if you are going heavy brush the rough cut mower might stand up better.

Obstacles - trees, stumps, rock outcrops, boulders, etc?
Collateral - people, livestock, windows?

A flail mower is a good implement for mowing grass and finishing off a large lawn or grassy area.

In very heavy grass or vines a flail can wind up the long foliage around the ends and have to be cut away from the bearings before proceeding.

A rotary cutter (slasher) is much less expensive, uses less HP to run, is easier to maintain, will cut about anything including small trees and brush.

My use is to go through the fields once in the spring with a rotary to knock down the big stuff. Then the flail is used to close cut and finish the job as needed. If you can mow year round then maybe a flail used several times a year would keep things low.

If you have a golf course in your area go check out their machine shed. They will have rotary and reel mowers but not flail mowers. Most home and commercial lawn mowers are rotary as well. Much of it is due to maintenance cost as well as initial purchase price.

The general advantages and disadvantages of each type has already been stated. Also check the "Similar Threads" at the bottom of this webpage for more information.

Are you recommending the Flail in all cases?

G'day,

Yes, I would.

I would advise you to purchase the flail mower with no
hesitation or second thoughts.

I have owned them for thirty plus years and would buy a
second one if I needed one.

I have the same mower my father bought and it has
been in use since the very early1980's with no problems
and normal maintenance. We replaced the original flail
mower rotor bearings for this flail mower the first time
6 years ago after 25 years of use.

The flail mower is the better and safer mower to use in all cases-
road side verges, drainage ditches and normal lawn mowing can
be accomplished with the same mower eliminating the need to
purchase a mower for simply mowing the lawn.

The flail mower will not throw anything it contacts like a slasher
/rotary cutter would as the verticut method with the side slicers
or scoop knives fold back if it hits an object.

It will work very well and reduce the clippings to the smallest
size for you.

The other benefit which comes at no extra charge is the rear roller,
it stripes the lawn for you with no extra charge and the flailmower
is much shorter than a slasher and if you purchase one with a hydraulic
side shift you will have a machine that can mow close to walls and fences
with no difficulty.
