Kubota BX23
I was just offered a 6 ft.flail mower for a great price but feel it is too large for a Kubota BX 23 with 23 hp. Flail mowers are no common in our area, does anyone have any experience they can share?

How heavy is it? That will be the issue. You have adequate power.

The model states 22-124. Some research says this is a ford model 907 flail with a weight of 602 pounds. Rear lift capacity of the bx23 is 684 lbs.

Yeah, that tractor / mower combination will be right at the limit.

Try to avoid heavy grass. Bush hog the heavy stuff first if possible. An alternative is to flail mow half a row a time to reduce bogging down.

Flail mowers take a lot of HP to turn. Good blades make a difference to efficiency as well.

Thanks for the replies. I may reconsider and give it a try.

MUCH too large.

Flail mowers eat HP. Don't even try.

Ditto, way to big for a little bx. You can send it my way, I have a 48" that I wish was bigger because it is not as wide as my B3200

I'm with Dean on this. I run a 6' flail topper on my DF254 which is 25hp. and only just enough power for the job. Unless Kubota horses are bigger than chinese ones, I reckon you'll struggle

It really depends on what the mower is going to be mowing... If you are mowing tough 3' or taller garbage, you will have to go slow and not bog down... if you keep things maintained and it is not tough stuff, then you will be fine... if a good price, then try it, you can always sell and get your money back later. Who knows, maybe a bigger tractor is in your future...
