Hello all,

In about 6 weeks (June 1) I plan on upgrading from my jd2305 to a 30pto jd2038r. Right now I have a 4' Befco flail mower and I LOVE it. Sometime after I get my new jd2038r I plan on getting a woodmaxx flail mower with hydraulic offset. It will mostly be used for trail maintenance, some work in the woods and especially along long hedgerows where I will use the offset to keep the woody vegetation back.

My question then is what do you all think is better, a 5' or 6' mower? I keep going back and forth and would love to hear some informed input.

Thanks in advance,

Bigger is almost always better. I never use a mower that doesn't AT LEAST exceed the track width of the tractor... unless of course, it's a boom mower.

The only time you should ever go smaller, is if the working area won't support it. For instance, if your trails are clearanced to 6ft width, and it simply won't clear. Otherwise, I'd say cut the trees and buy the 6 footer.

For you there are couple of things to keep in mind and not, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, to lose sight of:

Will the new mule set with the tires wide have enough mass with liquid ballast in the rears and front weights have enough weight to counter the G forces created by the movement of the mower when it is vertical and moved sideways in what is referred to as "the over center position" where the greatest majority of the weight/mass is fully extended to the right and elevated to its highest height with the three point hitch?????????????????????????????????

Dreaming and drooling is ok BUT if your intent is to purchase a side shifting mower and to use it for cutting back weed trees and brush YOU HAVE TO be sure YOU HAVE ENOUGH BALLAST to keep the tractor on the ground and prevent the front end from raising up while you are playing with the three point hitch draft control to raise the fully extended and vertical mower with a full set of
cast hammer knives.

I would much rather that you call Iowa Farm Equipment about your desired purchase as they will know whether your new mule
will be able to handle either size of side shifting flail mower with or without ballast to counteract the G forces created by the movement of this flail mower away from the centerline of the mule(the line that travels under the tractors rear axle to the front axle center pin.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU EVEN SEND THE BANK MONEY ORDER by registered and insured United States Mail.

You may find that the smallest Peruzzo side shifting flail mower will be better suited for your needs as it will mow directly from the centerline of the mule to the full extension width to the right so keep that in mind.
The other benefit is you will never lack for power either especially if you need to recut the brush as the Side Slicer knives will recut all the material where the cast hammer knives of the Delmorino and other flail mowers will only cut the brush and not recut it as it has the cast scoop knives.

Leonz,

I hear you about the weight and balance, but I am pretty certain that this is not an issue in this case. Firstly I will have a loader and bucket for counterweight and the 3pt is rated for twice the mower weight. I currently use a 4ft flail mower with my jd 2305 and it handles the weight and torque with ease--all while spinning hammer blades instead of side slicers. My dilemma is deciding between a mower that just cuts out my tires or go with a 6 footer and really be able to reach out sideways to clear up the edge of my living hedge border with my neighbor. The 6 footer would really reach, but the 5 footer would be more maneuverable. Either would have a hydraulic side shift.

The only negative I see with the larger 6' is you will have to pay attention going between trees, etc. I run a 74" on my 50hp and noticed I have to watch the width a little getting between things in the woods as the belt drive side sticks out a little more than the width of the tractor and could clip something if I am not paying 100% attention.

Code54,

I think you hit exactly on my main concern. At the moment I am leaning towards the 5 footer as I do use the tractor in the woods. It will just cut out my tires and still extend out 15 inches to the side for trimming along the woods. On the other hand I am sure I can talk myself into the 6 footer given a little more time.

I know this is a fairly old thread but if you liked the Befco flail so much why would you want to go to another brand, especially a Chinese one like Woodmax?
