I've got a JD950 with a Yanmar engine. Blew out a bearing and put a rod thru the block. Concerned about maybe harming a cooling jacket I sent the block out for pressure testing to a reputable shop and it came back OK. Put it all back together and ran great for about 9 months and starting smoking terribly. After investigation, found that cyl.1 injector was bad. Fixed that and ran the same, SICK. Checked compression and didn't have any, along with coolant in my oil.
If I plug off fuel supply to #1cylinder, tractor runs great and doesn't smoke. I saw on a discussion forum that diesels can run effectively with 2 out of 3 cylinders. Don't want to harm my JD anymore. Local shops don't want to bother trying to weld the cracked block. Any noteworthy suggestions???

Determine which engine it is and buy a rebuilt or new one.
The engines in our Deere/Yanmar tractors are just industrial units. They are used for many purposes other then tractors (larger boats, for example) so look beyond just tractor repair sites.
You may even want to look for a short block rather then a complete engine.

Roy's on the money there.... I've seen marine service Yanmar's for sale on Ebay and standby generator sets -- in addition to the usual tractor engine Yanmar's.

Of course, the Yanmar forum here on TBN might be a pretty good resource, too. Some of the owner's there might have a recommendation or two that would be worth trackin' down.
