I was curious, has anyone out there has performed their 50 hour service on their RTV? The manual calls for the change of the engine oil & filter, as well as the transmission oil and filters. I'm not clear on exactly how much transmission oil it will require on a change. I can read what the capacity is, 2.6 gallons, but does it take that amount to change? For example, on my pickup, the transmission holds 23 quarts of transmission fluid. However, when doing the transmission service and changing the filter, it only drains out about 10 quarts. If I went by the "capacity" and put in 23 quarts, I'd be over the capacity big time.
I only have about 25 hours on my RTV but I have decided to go ahead and change the engine oil and filter today. I'll likely wait a bit more before changing the transmission oil and filters.

The reason your pickup only takes 10 quarts is because the torque converter doesn't drain. That's why the new flush systems are nice as they change all of the oil and not just a small portion of it. I'm not sure about the RTV but I would think it would be similiar to the tractors. In the tractors you pretty much put in the full capacity. There isn't a reservoir like on an automatic transmission that oil stays in.

What type/weight of oil did you use?

My dealer told me to use 15W-40 year round. I was skeptical of this as the manual doesn't mention 15W-40 at all. I sent an inquiry to Kubota:

"Comments: My question concerns a difference in recommendations between the RTV900 manual and the dealer about engine oil.

The manual specifies a CD, CE or CF 10W-30, 10W-40, or a single grade 10W, 20 or 30 depending on the ambient temperature. The dealer is telling me to use 15W-40, year round, no matter what the temperature. It seems to me that if 15W-40 was acceptable it would be listed in the operator’s manual."

I received this reply from Kubota:

"You need to follow what is recommended in the manual unless the dealer is willing to pay for any premature wear. It is our engineers that recommend oils."

I think I'll stick to what Kubota recommends.

Lloyd, I generally agree that you should use what the manual recommends; however, Kubota has long been behind in updating manuals in that regard. And I'm really surprised at the e-mail response you got. I'm not sure you'll even be able to find a CD, CE, or CF rated oil anymore. Those are rather old ratings. At any rate, I'm not about to tell you what to use and am not going to contradict anything a Kubota representative told you, but as far as I'm concerned, personally, I agree with your dealer. That's what most of us use in diesel tractors and that's what I'd use in the RTV.

When I bought my RTV my dealer made a pen and ink change in my book from their experience. Book called for 2.6 gal. He changed it to 2.9 gal. I was in the other day and he said Kubota rep said 'offical' amount is 3.1 gal from Kubota. I'll be doing my 50 hr service within the next month so I'll see who is correct.

I used a Kubota oil filter and 2.1 quarts of Mobile 1 Delvac synthetic 15W-40 oil. I've been using the Mobile 1 Delvac synthetic oil in all of my diesel products for years. On most any diesel engine discussion board you will find that about 90% of the people, including the leading diesel repair shops, exclusively use the Delvac oil. It is one of the few motor oils that is specifically made for diesel engines and states as much on their packaging.

Mobil 1 Delvac has one of the best reputations there is when it comes to synthetic oils. It is a true group IV fully synthetic oil. Many an oil analysis has come back on diesel trucks after 10,000 miles with the statement "engine oil within spec OK for continued use recheck in xxxx miles". Usually the only recommendations are to change the filter, add the difference to make up the loss from the filter and recheck later.

With that knowledge, I still change the oil in my truck every 4000 miles and in my tractors every 50 hours. I've never had an engine failure, nor has anyone else who uses the same time and oil changes with the Mobile 1 Delvac. Now some of the farmers around me tell me that it is impractical to change their tractors oil any more often than every 100 to 200 hours (depending on the farmer), but when using the Mobile 1 Delvac, they have put thousands and thousands of hours on their tractors and none have ever had an engine failure. Coincidence? Maybe, but I like the odds.

While Rotella T "synthetic" isn't bad, (especially at the walmart special price of 12.88 a gallon instead of the "normal" price of 18.88) it is a group III motor oil. Even though it says "synthetic" it is actually a conventional base stock that has been "cracked" to give it "synthetic" qualities.

Same goes for Castrol syntec. It is a group III oil. I hate how the marketing strategy is really a lie to the consumer.

Anyway, I've probably studied motor oils too much for my own good, but that is what the general concensus is based upon oil analysis and experience. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I'm mainly curious about the transmission oil change experience in the RTV. I'll certainly use Kubota filters. I suppose I'll also use Kubota UDT as well since it is still under warranty. However, I was wondering if using a synthetic oil may help the sticking in gear problem Kubota RTV's have.

I had a Kubota corporate guy and then my dealer call me back yesterday on my transmission. They both told me that I have to "pop" it out of gear. Technique they said. Okay...but I've never had to slap the gear selector in anything else I own to get it out of gear. Maybe a more slippery synthetic would help? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I only have 25 hours on my RTV and the recommended change isn't due for another 25 hours. However, it is getting a bit harder to get out of gear all the time now. Change the transmission oil and filters now?

I found it kinda odd too, that in my JD HPX manual, they specify 10w-40 oil for the Yanmar diesel. No mention of a diesel specific oil.

You would think it would require a 15w-40 diesel rated oil instead of 10w-40 gasser oil.

I'm going to shoot an email to Yanmar and see what they recommend.

It was actually a tech at JD who told me about the Mobile 1 Delvac oil. Several years ago I had asked my JD dealer about going to synthetic oil. They didn't know. To be more precise, they didn't have a clue and were more than willing to assert their opinions as if they were fact.
Therefore, I called JD corporate. About two days later I received a call from a heavily accented guy who told me that he would recommend the Mobil 1 Delvac after the vehicle was broken in. I'd personally never heard of group III or group IV oils or that there was even a difference in oils for a diesel versus a gasser.
That is also when I'd found that several local farmers had been using the Mobil 1 Delvac oil. I've used ever since.

I'll stick to what Kubota recommends at least while it's still under warranty. It's only a 12 month period so I'll probably only do two oil changes. I'll use 10W-30 Kubota oil this fall for the winter (same weight that came from the factory) and probably switch to Kubota straight 30 next spring for the summer. After that I'll consider going with the Delvac 15W-40 although I'm not sure that 10W-30 still might be a better choice for the winter. Could be that because Delvac 15W-40 is synthetic it may have better flow characteristics than a conventional 10W-30 at around 0F. I'll have to look into that.

Spoke to a tech at the JD dealership. He said that when they service the diesel gators, they use JD Hy-Gard 15w-40, which is supplied to JD by Rotella.

He recommended to go ahead and use the 15w-40 diesel spec oil.

Still waiting on response from Yanmar on their opinion but I'll go ahead and use the Rotella.
