Like every year our first garden harvest is asparagus. I planted the root crowns 15 years ago and every year yields a great crop for about a month. The purple variety is far better than the green: it’s sweeter, fatter, and never gets tough and woody no matter how thick the stalks. But I’ve never seen it in stores, so you have to grow your own.
