I was once again on the backhoe tonight. With 4 hrs on the clock the engine suddenly went to idle. I throttled back up and again it returned to idle as I let off the lever. I pulled the cover and found the double nut (or bolt and nut) to be at least finger tight, so a grabbed a 1/2" wrench and loosened the lower nut (which is actually a bolt head)...then tightened the upper nut untill the throttle would hold it's position, then locked it down.
I think the vibes might have simply caused the friction fit between the nut and the painted bracket to wear through the paint and loose it's bite.

Interesting. I'm still having an occasional blank tach/hour meter and dead temp gauge. It seems to be when starting up cold and will last that way for several minutes. My latest theory is that it is a battery voltage issue. My 3-year-old climbs up on the tractor and turns the hazard lights on (the only thing you can do without the key) and I'm wondering if that runs the battery down low enough that the tach won't work for some reason until the battery gets charged again after start.

The throttle bolt probably wasn't tightened enough at assembly. I have actually loosened mine as my throttle lever was too stiff, it didn't like to move at-all /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As for your tach/hr meter problem, I'd recommend checking the all the electrical connections under your dash to make sure everything is tight. A diesel vibrates much more when cold and evens out when warmed up. You could have a loose connector. Usually if it's a slide on all you'll need to do is slide it off and slide it back on until it seats. If it's a screw or bolt -on make sure the screw/nut is tight. You'll find that most electrical problems on tractors are generally due to loose grounds or loose connectors.
I would think the battery voltage is all right as it takes 100 times more current to start your tractor than power your tach/he meter.
In either case, there will be minor issues with machines that operate on rough surfaces and most minor problems can be resolved quickly and easily by the owner.
Of course theres always that factory warranty to fall back on.

Good luck

I've had the same issue with my throttle lever. It could be a coincidence, but I've noticed that it tends to loosen up with seasonal changes in outside temperature.
