Firewood cost per cord

I tend to just cover the top enough to stop the water from above penetrating the center of the wood on pallets. I have found that the mice like to make their nests in the dry environment of the wood stack so I have taken to leaving pouches of mouse poison in them occasionally. So far, have only found a few nests. I like the idea of splitting and stacking directly onto the pallets, and then let them dry for two years before bringing them inside. Only stacking once and moving the wood once really cuts down on the labor (attached).
Yesterday was a good day for splitting and stacking. Today is mighty windy, but may go do some more just for the exercise.

beenthere,

Splitting and stacking right on the pallets does save lots of labor. Moving the pallets with the tractor is very nice. I have room under our back porch overhang to store two pallets. Unfortunately I started late in splitting wood so I have to hand pick to find the dry pieces and move them by wheel barrow. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I have found plenty of mice nests. Just found a new one. I also have found some wasps/hornets. They seemed to be attracted to the "heat" of the pallet. Thankfully they are sluggish in the cold and easily elimentated. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I tarp the top. Do it more for keeping leaves out than rain. If all the holes fill with leaves then the rain will have a place to lay. Even if it doesnt get the wood wet, busting frozen logs off the pile and handling snow covered logs all the time isnt worth the trouble if I just have to toss a chunk of plastic over the wood.
The sides stay open so there is air flow through the stack or pile.

We have lots of Locust trees. Those things sure burn good and hot. Tough on the chainsaw as well.
