I am looking at a Honda WH20 water pump to use as a fire pump. It comes with 2 inch NPT inlets and outlets. Honda WH20 General Purpose High Pressure Water Pump.

I need to get the hoses. Apache has some reasonably priced hoses. They indicate Industrial Pipe thread couplings. Are they referring to NPT of industrial strength? or is Industrial Pipe thread a different thread and the hose will not fit the pump without some kind of adapter? Water Pump PVC Suction Hose 2in. x 20ft. | Discharge + Suction Hoses | Northern Tool + Equipment

Also some fire hoses have NST couplings. Does an NST coupling use NPT thread? Can I screw an NST coupled fire hose onto a Honda WH20 which has the NPT thread? Firequip 800 Fire Hose - Free Shipping thru Aug. 31

Thanks

npt national pipe tapered

nst national hose standard not tappered

different pitches and thread diameter

check out your local hydraulic shop if they sont handle it they will tell you who does locally or check mcMaster carr

most of the 2" pumps at the fire house we use 2" npt hose on suction and convert the discharge to 1 1/2 nst to match the hose on our rigs.

Not to hijack the thread but what is the difference in the hose types? Double
Walled, Lined etc.? I would like to have some fire hose to drag around out back and water my kids dirtbike track but between trying to figure out the fittings, hose type etc. I haven't moved on it. Right now I use some of that blue hose you can buy at the farm stores but a couple pieces are getting holes in them... probably from the dragging.

"blue hose"? only blue hose i know of is non-pressure discharge hose for like a pump.

fire hose is double jacketed.

the old stuff was cotton braid over a rubber hose. but you need to let the cotton dry out each time you use it else it rot. so most fire depts are going to new Nitrile Covered or urathane fire hose which you can put away wet with no ill affects.

I can't find any 2 inch NPT to 1.5 inch NST adapters. Its 2 inch NPT to 2.5 NST and that's about it.

I may have to go to a 2 inch NPT coupling, then 2 in x 1.5 bushing and then 1.5 NPT to 1.5 NST male adapter. It seams a bit convoluted but I can't find a direct adapter.

I am looking at hose too. Hopefully I won't be dragging the hose around but when I do I want it to hold up.

Northern Tool has heat resistant 1.5 hose in 50 ft lengths but doesn't indicate thread! I emailed them with the question. Apache High Temperature Water Discharge Hose 450 PSI, 50ft. Length | Discharge + Suction Hoses | Northern Tool + Equipment

Or am I better off with 1.5 fire hose from Chief Supply (available in blue!) I'll need at least 100 ft. Firequip 800 Fire Hose - Free Shipping thru Aug. 31

And then there's nozzles:) Why did I think this would be easy?

Thanks

zeuspaul,

OK, here is what you need...
*2" NPT(F) x 2 1/2" NST(M) .
And then...
*2 1/2" NST(F) x 1 1/2" NST(M) Reducer .

You can then screw your fire hose directly onto the reducer. Or if you decide to go with a 2 1/2" fire hose or 3" fire hose, you just take off the adapter.

This is the way we set up the gasoline powered pumps on our tankers. We use them with an 1 3/4 inch hose (screws onto the 1 1/2" NST reducer to fight brush fires and then we remove the adapter to transfer water from the tanker to our pumpers with a 2 1/2" hose.

You might want to look into forestry hose if you are using it outside for wildfires etc...

Comparison @ Darley.com - Fire Apparatus / Fire Equipment / Fire Pumps / Fire Truck

Double jacket fire hose. 1 1/2" x 50', 800 PSI rated, 17 pounds, $128.95.
Forestry hose. 1 1/2" x 50', 450 PSI rated, 7 pounds, $91.95.

Yes, that is what I meant, discharge hose.

fire hose is double jacketed.

I've been looking on ebay (hoping to find something cheap) which explains the variety of hose... sounds like I do not want the older cotton stuff as this will lay around outside all summer.

Thanks!

I think I can reasonably expect 100 GPM from the Honda WH20 pump. Should I consider 2.5 inch hose? When the brush fire comes it will come from the east. I have at least 100 ft clear around the house.

I want the option to spray the house and local spot fires. I doubt I'll be fighting the brush itself. I'll probably want 100 to 150 feet of hose. Possibly up to 300 if I tap a neighbor's pool.

I'll have about 4000 gallons of water available or forty minutes at 100 gpm. Is 1.5 inch hose the way to go or would 2.5 inch hose be better? Does 1.5 inch hose support 100 gpm without a lot of loss? Are there other considerations?

Darley.com has 2 inch female NPT X 1.5 inch NSTM which they seem to indicate is NST! Thanks for the link. I would lose the option for the larger hose which seems like a good idea.

Thanks

Definately stay with 1 1/2" hose. It will put out more water than you think. A 3/4" garden hose will put out aprox. 5-10 gpm depending on pressure. A 1 1/2" fire hose will put out up to 100 gpm. At 100 gpm and 100 psi that hose will be fun to hold by yourself. With a 2 1/2" hose you wouldn't be able to hold it, let alone drag it.

That's why I suggested going with forestry hose. It's lighter to begin with. Image how heavy 200' of 1 1/2" hose will be full of water. Each 50' section will hold about 4.5 gallons. That would be 18 gallons of water in 200' or about 150# plus the weight of the hose.

200' of 2 1/2" would hold aprox. 47 gallons or 392#. Try dragging that around.

On our brush trucks we actually us one of the 1 1/2" NST to 3/4" GHT (garden hose thread) adapters and use the industrial garden hose from Sams to put out spot fires. Not near as much weight to drag around. You can put several hundred feet of this hose on a reel and easily drag it through the woods.
