I have a 50x100 metal building in which a pick-up caught on fire and was destroyed. The fire was contained to the truck but the building and contents suffered heat and smoke damage. The building has the vinyl backed insulation which is typically used in metal buildings. Some of the smoke/soot got into the insulation. The smoke/soot is quite corrosive to the steel structure of the building (it has caused rust). Does anyone have knowledge/experience in just how corrosive this might be? Will the metal panels actually rust through in time or will it just become etched. Must I strip it all out and start over? What will happen if I do not strip out the old insulation?

Ranger, do you know the manufacture of the building. That would seem to be the best place to ask. I’ll be interested to see what the answer is to your questions.

By the way, welcome to the forum.

I worked on dinner boats for a while and we had a liquid we would paint on the rust (very heavy rust on large valves), we would let it dry then paint it like we would any normal piece of metal. Perhaps this would work for you? I do not remember what the material is called but I have seen rust inverter(?) in NAPA and JCWhitney catalogs.

Good Luck, PTRich

PTRich - Thanks for the suggestion about the paint product.
It seems like Gempler's has a product such as you mentioned

MarkV - The building was not constructed by a company. Before I owned the property someone bought the components and some individual built the building. Thanks for the suggestion.
