finger screen

I changed the hydraulic fluid and filter on my "73" john deere 820, but could not remove the finger screen to clean it. I tried rotating it with my thumb to loosen it but it didn't turn, I tried pulling on it with small pliers, but didn't want to rip it, so I left it alone. Does it require a speacial tool or did I give up too soon?

You gave up too soon. It's possible it has debris on the outside of it making it difficult to pull out.
