After several false starts, wife and I are ready to start working on turning our retirement property into something more than just a weekend destination.

The first task is to get 2-3 acres of what is now non-productive hay fields into better shape so that it can be used for various gardening crops . . . . yes I know that's a lot for a garden, but that's the plan for now.

I do not have either a disk harrow or a roto-tiller for pulling with the 4035. Would like some specific recommendations please.

Thanks!

A rototiller is really nice for a garden plot. Two passes at 90 degrees should leave you ready to plant.
Without a tiller, you will need some sort of plow to break the ground and turn under old crops. Then you also need some sort of harrow to break up the big clods and smooth the dirt out to get it ready to plant.

The tiller will want the grass or old crops mowed down to no more than about 8” high or it will wrap around the tines and make your life difficult. Not that I would recommend trying to plow under whole cornstalks, so a mowing the area first is usually a good idea.

It really comes down to how much you have to spend. A decent 5’ tiller will probably cost close to 2 grand for something that will last the rest of your life. You may be able to find an old plow and harrow for under a grand that will do basically the same job.

Whichever way you go to prepare the ground, get a set of cultivators, 2-3 acres of weeding sounds like a job rather than a hobby.
