Tractor
jd 4020
I had some threads gathering help from everyone trying to decide on what to do.

I owned a 4020 with a 7ft mower and was a very reliable tractor, but no loader, very tall! I was contemplating keeping the 4020 and just getting a small, sub 25 hp tractor OR something in the 40 to 50 range and sell the 4020.

opinions of course were all over the map...here's what I ended up with and have some questions.

I ended up selling the 4020 with 7ft. It was a gas and seems the value of 4020s are not what they were 10 yrs ago. I took 3rd offer that was best, but all w/in 100, so probably got a fair price. and had to let mower go with it.

I then bought a new mx5800 with loader, 1 rear remote, wr long 3rd function, r4 tires. Plus they had a used land pride RCR2772 mower 6 ft, very heavy. I paid 31,5xx all in on the tractor loader, valves financed for $530/mo. I paid cash for the mower of 2k.

when i checked on tractor at dealership, they had located it and it had .8 hrs. delivered the next day, it had 1.5.

I been running it, mowing little varying rpm, etc. so far no higher than the 540 rpm at pto speed. Thought I'd check here about breakin period .. the manual doesn't have much info.

how are you all breaking in a new tier 4 engine?

540 PTO rpm speed is close to W.O. so that takes care of the break-in. Perform your 50 hour service and enjoy. There is a nice aftermarket cab available if the need should arise. Follow your manual concerning regenerations and clean ultra low sulfur fuel is your friend. Long also offers a load accumulator that softens the bounce if you perform extensive loader travel w/ a load.

Congrats on your MX5800. We really like ours. As to a break-in period, I wasn't told anything about a break-in process. I read the manual and couldn't find anything in the manual about breaking in. All I found in the manual was the "don't idle unnecessarily" instruction in the "Prohibition of unnecessary idling operation" heading on page 14 in the section about regeneration. So, I operated the tractor without paying attention to breaking in, but I did vary the RPMs some and don't exceed the 540 PTO level. We have 45 hours on the tractor in a little over a year. We have had one service with no problems reported We have had one regeneration, at about 30 hours as I recall.

The MX5800 is a great tractor and I'm sure you're going to love it! I've got 250 hours on mine with no issues. IMO, 31.5K is reasonable for an MX5800 equipped as you describe. The only down side I see is your 72" mower. I traded my Befco 72" for a Landpride 84" because the tractor with R4 tires was slightly wider than the 72" mower.

I too was told nothing about a break in period at the dealer and as you say, there isn't much in the manual. The unnecessary idling mentioned refers more to the regen process than break in. Common sense says, take it easy on the machine for the first 50 hours. As mentioned above, vary the RPM, keep it at or below PTO speed and do the 50 hour maintenance as per the manual.

Congrats on the MX5800
I have had mine for about 2 1/2 Months digging good sizes boulders some over 2 Ft Diameter and it has been great 49.8 hours so far and my 50 hour service is scheduled on Tuesday.
This is my 1st tractor so I do not have anything experience wise to compare it to other Tractors but it has supersized me at what it can handle.
Especially as the boulder size grew in the trench I had to dig with the Backhoe.

Enjoy your NEW Tractor.

I forgot to mention that we also have R4 tires and we had the rear wheels set out as wide as possible for stability. As a result, the outside-to-outside width of the rear tires is a little over 78". We sold the 66" box blade and 72" scrape blade we had for our L3800, and we bought from Everything Attachments 84" replacements. We sold our 66" LandPride rotary mower and bought an EA 72" rotary mower. It works okay for our purposes but we would be better off with an 84" mower since we have our rear wheel set so wide.

RBTJR,
You have a few more hp than me but I would caution against a 7 ft rotary. Had one, sold it. Issue is they are single gear box, and the blade sweep time for each blade rotation is much longer than the 6 ft. We are talking seconds here, but in that time you are cutting an extra ft of material. I felt my tractor straining. An 8 ft rotary has two gear boxes, 4 swinging blades, each blade doing less work, better cutting results, less effort. As an aside, I have a befco C-70, finish mower, it has swinging blades like a rotary, but a nice finish cut. Also height adjustment to 6 inches for field/pasture, It has a cut width of 9 foot, 2 inches And NO sign of engine strain. BTW, my wheel width is set at 74 inches w/ R4, I find that adequate. On my IH, width is 84 inches, that is super stable. I cut both pasture and lawn w/ the befco. Good luck.
(7 ft rotary produced extreme windrow result of clippings, FYI)

Thanks for the replies!

I havent exceeded PTO speed and only ran at PTO for short interval, then vary down to under 2k and back up. Yeah, I was more concerned about the dpf than break in but will probably stay under PTO now until after 50.

Another question....the manual looks to say max weight of rotary cutter is 1000lbs. Per land pride, the weight of rcf2772 is @1100.

But manual says lift arm capacity is like over 2400.

Why does does Kubota limit mower weight to 1k? I doubt the extra 100lbs is going to make a difference but didn't know why mower weight is less than half of lift capacity? Just safety related?

The 2400# lift capactiy of the MX is measured at the lift points. The center of mass of an implement can be 24" or more rearward creating a "lever" effect. Depending on it's dimensions, a 1000# implement can apply much more than it's own weight on the 3pt hitch.

That being said, I wouldn't worry about an 1100# implement on your MX. I occasionally use an old rotary cutter weighing over 1200#. Bouncing down the road with no weight up front, I occasionally lift the front wheels off the ground though.

Thanks for the feedback. Good point about the 7' rotary mower. I was not considering buying one, just noodling, but I appreciate your point. And about your finish mower, I had about 15 years ago a 7 1/2' Bush Hog finish mower that I really liked. I sold it when we sold the place I used it on, which had a single two-acre wide open area to mow, and we bought and built on a place that is more well suited to zero-turn mowers (lots of trees, etc.). I'd like to have another finish mower but can't justify it.
