This Husky built tractor has a "GT" RS800 transmission which is prone to the smallest accumulation of mowing debris which effects operation of the variator. This component controls the operation of the the transmission in terms of forward and reverse. It can also lock up in either gear, or obstruct neutral. The only access to the transmission is to remove the cumber some fuel tank which fully obstructs access to the transmission. This fuel tank situation is apparently known to Husky, as the replacement tank for the original tank listed in the Sears manual is a under the fender type? It costs about $120.00? In view of the fact that this is a design defect I messaged GT about the continual cleaning requirement, but no reply! I also questioned why, in view of this known and obvious problem why a dust cover was not incorporated into the design? They now offer one, but not as a retrofit!
In view of the fact I was spending 10 hours seasonally cleaning the the "VATIATOR " as it requires about 4.5 hours to access, clean and reassemble the unit. I refitted a 1.5 gal fuel tank from a Sears Suburban on the rear fender, thus eliminating the original monstrosity. Which leaves the transmission open to view under the movable seat. I made a hinged cover to cover the now "access hole", gasketed the edges and installed a 1/4" winged screw down bolt to hold the cover down. Painted it to match the rear. Now to clean it I open the access door, blown down the small amount of cuttings and in 5 minutes the cleaning is completed versus 4.5 hours of frustration! I would include pics, but don't have the function.
In my communications, Husky knows of this problem, but won't respond and GT doesn't seem to care.
One problem occurred when it stuck in forward and I ran my Wife's steel garden crook down which supported a bird feed and a hanging plant. It was bent out of shape, but I managed to correct it, bride was not happy! Plant and feeder survived.
Also the mower deck is a second rate design as the blade is recessed so far into the housing it limits adjustment to "Scalp" or So-So position. The Sears tech would not attempt to adjust it when under warranty, as he said he could do "No Better"! Give's you a good feeling about Husky customer care, as my little used Husky 350 chain saw has an odd problem with getting fuel, even with a new carb?

Good Luck, keep well!

I have a Craftsman "garden tractor" and yes, we all know Sears doesn't make anything. I thought the local Husqvarna dealer could fix it because it's a Husky product. It's not. This common misconception is because both roll out of the same factory which was MTD. At some point MTD was bought by or is a division of American Yard Products. Okay, I don't care, I just want a seal for the transaxle. I tried the mechanics in two shops as well as doing a lot of surfing. The part number wasn't difficult to find unfortunately it no longer exists. This mower was built in 2010. That's ten years ago and a SEAL is unavailable? All I have to do I guess is keep refilling it on a regular basis (which involves removing the transaxle forr access), dismantle the transaxle and attempt to identify a usable substitute seal, or replace the unit. Since I didn't get "warm fuzzzies" from the Husky dealer when inquiring about replacements and the Cub Cadet dealer was bending over backward to get me a replacement machine in a timely manner I'm moving from Craftsman to Cub Cadet. I will be attempting to replace the transaxle seal but at a time convenient to me. This is NOT a convenient time. Perhaps after summer is over.

Hi,
My seals started leaking at 30Hrs. of use, E-bay has the seals, but the lubricant maybe a problem, as no local distributor has even heard of it? Any info as to a reasonable source? The lube has to inserted via removal of some part in the font topside of the tranny. Yup, you will have to remove the fuel tank etc. to add the lube. I am going to do my seals soon. MTD once made all the mowers in the USA including some John Deere, it apparently sold off part of the mower manufacturing business, I think the yellow ones(?) are made by them plus the MTD line. I think Ryobi is the complete corporate owner. In terms of seal replacement it is listed on the GT website along with other repairs and parts list.

Craftsman products have been made by numerous suppliers. My Craftsman DGS 6500 is made by Husqvarna who is owned by Electrolux. Go figure.

The lubricant in my transaxle sure smells like regular 80W-90 gear oil. It is the standard six speed transaxle not the hydrostatic. As far as Alan's answer, yes, Husqvarna was owned by Electorlux - may still be. The whole thing is part of the American Yard Tractor line at this point. This should come as no surprise most (not all) compact tractors are actually products of LS out of Korea. You don't even want to know how many car manufacturers are owned by Fiat.

This is a case of Globalization, we need to bring bring our products home. I am not a fan of buying from Red China, also known as Huan Chinese as they started with Mao. They are the only source for some products as American manufacturer's purchaser components from China ,B+S buys carbs and other parts, perhaps engines also. Most Chinese small engines are Honda copies and Honda parts will interchange.
