Does it bother anyone else when you go to post an response to a post and go to the profile to see if that will help in your reply, but there ain't no info. That just tweaks my beak.

Isn't it a little early for costumes??? Halloween isn't for another few months..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif OK..... I know what you mean on both counts. It bothers me more when the post is from a "seasoned" TBN'r rather than a new comer. I expect the new guy/gal to be skeptical about putting in much information, but I don't answer posts by seasoned posters unless they give the basic information in their profiles. It isn't like we are asking for their telephone number. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

With so many nightmare stories out there about internet vandalism it's easy to understand folks being a little shy.

I got over shy when I was about thirteen and acne arrived at the same time as real interest in girls. Being shy didn't get it. Being unshy did better. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The problem with a blank profile is a lot of the questions can't be answered correctly. What works in Arizona or Flordia might be and chances are, the wrong thing to do in Montana or Maine.

I wouldn't make too much out of it though. This, the internet, is just another neighborhood we live in. We have our work, our family, our friends, our neighbors, and now we have the internet. Most of us are the same person, or at least try to be, in all of the places we interact with others. The internet should be no different. So a little caution before one is entirely comfortable with the situation is understandable and accepted.

It is a big help when that profile is filled out. I've seen lots of vague questions like " Where does my engine oil go in?".. and then no tractor listed.. If they have a familiar one in the profile.. they might still get their ?'s answered.

I've never really thought about filling out my profile, and I don't think I've every really paid any attention to what other folks' profiles are. If they ask a question about anything, I figure try to answer it as best as possible with whatever information they give us...if it is a flawed answer based on poor information, so what. It's apt to be an opinionated answer rather than a factual answer that will eventually lead to some arguement (again) about 2wd vs 4wd, hydro vs gear, green vs blue vs orange vs orange vs red vs red vs red etc, gun owners vs non gun owners, hunters vs PETA, gas vs diesel, ....

...but I ramble. Just a little jaded to forums...It's great that some folks fill out profiles, but I'm not even that wild about having to register to post, but I guess that's fair since I don't even have to pay anything to mope around these forums..

I don’t see any reason not to fill out at least some of the information in the profile.

It is not necessary to fill out anything personal about oneself.

I got this kind of tractor, live in a general geographic area, have so many acres, and so on.

All this sort of info groups one with many, many, many others. Really is meaningless info, except if you ask a question you would like the best possible feedback on.

Can’t see how putting such info in a profile could hurt the member, but can see how it could help him get better answers to questions he might post.

Might also save us the trouble of typing the extra I have no idea where you live so I don’t know if this applies or not disclaimer.

If one is going to be around a while, I vote for filling out the profile. What can it hurt? Nothing specific that is directly tied to oneself needs to be included…

Hi
To me the profile is important because it tells me something about the person giving advice or the answer to a problem. I like to know what qualifies the person to give advice. If asking a question about a diesel engine the information coming from a diesel mechanic would mean more than coming from a nurse. If you have a medical problem, which would you tend to believe for a fix a doctor or lawyer? I always look at the profile of the folks posting answers to questions. A good example would be Inspector507, who better to give advice on Electrical code related questions. The profile gives some validity to the answer in my opinion.

Profiles can only give you any sense of value to the information being conveyed if one trusts that the profile is being truthful...

I'm not from Missouri (but no one would know since I don't fill out my profile), but I do subscribe to the Mark Twain theory of believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see. Free advice is worth every penny you pay for it...

Hi
Can’t argue with that

Maybe on some other types of websites, most people are untruthful, but I would care to bet that over 90% of the profile information for those TBN members that are nice enough to fill theirs out are true.

I will second that and anyone that has been here for a while will know that it is rare day that I ever agree with Gatorboy. Mark this day on your calender. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It could be that 100% of folks are truthful, or 100% are untruthful...the only truth is we will never know...just a natural cynic, I guess.

I do rate Tractorbynet.com as one of the best websites as far as alleged truthfulness and cooperation, but there is always a possibility of a bad apple in the barrel, so I tend to ere to the side of caution.

There's nothing wrong with adding it to my profile - I'm not trying to be secretive about my information. I doubt that any identity thieves will get enough information off of this forum to do any damage.

Fact is, I'm just too lazy to fill it out. Like I said earlier, I never look at other people's profiles, so I guess I never thought about anybody wanting to look at mine.

But your research left off the Ford tractors that the family owns/I use, the Yanmars/Kubotas/John Deeres/Belarus/Massys that I have owned and used, all of the sundry attachments, all of the other vehicles (trucks and other off road machines), the other structures (barns, root cellars, tree houses) that I've built, the other professions that I've had, raising chickens, donkeys, bison, sheep, and lots of other miscellaneous information that is pretty much useless unless it is in the proper context. I.E. if someone says that are looking to build a root cellar, then I would post my experience to qualify any type of input I would have. I figure rather than post all of that boring pointless information for everyone to be bored with, I'll pull it out of the closet one piece at a time.

Of course, with the time I've spent writing posts on this thread, I could have filled out my forum....

but now I'm just gonna be contrary about it.

Of course, with the time I've spent writing posts on this thread, I could have filled out my forum (profile)...

I was all prepared to write this same statement until you pointed it out in your own post. So, you mean you don't know I live in Bel Air, MD? I must applaud you for being able to read posts and not even drift your eyes over to see our information in the left column. This information is from OUR PROFILES, and as you have claimed, you don't read, nor even thought about reading someone else's profile information. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I must say that I filled out my profile on day one and I often look at other members profiles. If I am reading a post from someone, I often think about where they are from and what equipment they have. One look at their profile and I have my answers (unless they didn't provide info, and then I am just disappointed /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif ).

I also take a look at someone's profile for the reasons that have been stated. But I also feel that sometimes, you can get a feeling for characteristics of the person by the way their profile is filled out. I hope, for example, that when people view my profile, they not only will realize that I don't have my tractor yet /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif, but that I've got a pretty good sense of humor. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Of course, then there's always people like Junkman. By reading his profile, you'd Never suspect that the guy had any kind of sense of humor, let alone one of the sharpest wits around! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
