Has anyone done this?

We are buying a house which has an 18 x 36 below ground pool with vinyl liner. I has about 3-4 ft of concrete around it.
It is in bad shape and since we have had 4 pools in our life, we don't want the 5th. I am told that these pools have metal sides below grade and then sand on the bottom. Depth of pool below grade is 3 ft on one end and 6 ft on the other.

I was thinking about sawing the concrete into squares and using a tractor with backhoe to lift the concrete out. Then use the backhoe to pull out the metal sides and send them to recycle. All of this after the pool is drained , electricity cut off and vinyl liner removed.

Then comes my delema. Do I bury the concrete and fill hole with fill dirt in lifts of 12 inches or take concrete off site and fill hole with fill dirt? Access is no problem.

Thanks

I would haul off the concrete,

could call he road department, as at least around here some times they put junk concrete in wash out areas to help control erosion of running water during storms,

my dad had a old shallow cistern and he though that he would fill it with rock he picked out of the fields, well it was one big mess when we need a new water, and electrical line put in, I may have been able to go around it but did not know the exact location of it any more..

I have filled in maybe 6 or 8 pools for customers. Ive always just taken backhoe to bust concrete sidewalks and sides into smaller pieces then put it all in the deep end of pool for fill. Most homes around here have yards big enough that when the pools were dug the excess dirt was tapered out around the yard so i just take dozer and put the dirt back where it came from. Only one pool did i have to haul in fill material.

Make sure to check with your local town etc, at least here they don't allow you to leave the concrete in, you have to dig everything out and then fill. If you do leave it in I'd try to get it nice and deep so you don't have to deal with it again.

no need to dig all the concrete out. just chip away the sides below grade and throw all the material at the bottom. The get free fiill dirt from someone on craigslist. free fill is always available. I have done this for my sister. Easy as pie. Don't go to the township like suggested. They want money for everything. Just bury the **** thing

how far is the pool from the house or future potential building site ? pools generally are fairly close to the house (within 50 feet or so) from my experience

my thought is deal with it now, or deal with it later. if there is no intention of building in the area of the pool, then I guess the concrete could simply be buried.
if however, a garage / shed / barn / home reno / septic is in the plans, then get rid of it.

if you are artistic or know someone who is, then there might be additional options for large concrete blocks ... nah, probably not

if the concrete can be chipped up to small pieces it might be useful for driveway material on the property

can you maintain the electricity (after the pool removal) ? might be an advantage to have an electrical source on the yard for a yard deck with lights, BBQ etc

I would advise you to inquire with city/township before burying the pool because where I live an inground pool raises your property taxes. We must get a permit $20 to bury pool and reduce property taxes.

If no permit is taken out then you still pay the extra property tax even though the pool is gone.

I would remove concrete and steel.

Oh, i didn't think about the added tax for the pool.

I did go down to bldg dept and they said no permit needed and no restrictions on the fill. The tax people said just take a before and after pic and bring down to them and they will reduce taxible value of property. Current tax value of pool and concrete is 12000.

I just didn't want to get into a situation where I was constantly filling in little holes in the yard due to settlement.

Thanks

Here they normally document punching holes and then fill...

There are several I know with very nice concrete borders around their "New" lawns.

There is an old motel that 40 of 50 years ago built a wood frame building over the pool and the old pool is used as a basement/cellar... it was done when there was little or no regulations... the owner said it is 100% dry
