Putting back the hoses for the FEL. I had new hoses made up with the old field fittings. Trouble is that 2 or 3 of them have fittings facing the wrong direction so that I have to twist the hose to get them on. Can these be turned without removing the hose completely?

I presume these were reusable hose ends. If yes you can adjust these by putting a wrench on both pieces and rotating the inner fitting. Note: there must be a gap between the inner and outer portion of these fittings.

Yes, re-usable, but not more than a couple of times he said. They are 1987 vintage. Thanks

It sounds to me like they were typical crimp hose ends and he was trying to save you some money...just a guess...

That is one issue of ordering (online) hose assemblies where both ends have angled fittings...even though they do usually ask for an orientation...they don't always get them right...

This is part of the reason I like to keep hose orders as simple as possible and use mechanical fittings for the application...

On re-using crimp fittings...the only time I've personally seen ends reused (and guaranteed) were with "some" ORFS ends (there may be others?) where they only use the mechanical part of the end fitting and use a new crimp sleeve...so if the OP's ends were ORFS...it's kosher IMO...

They don't have crimps thank goodness otherwise it would have been 28 new fittings:eek: So I was lucky, they are definitely a re-usable type....I think they are a screw type fitting.
I took them into a hydraulic place, when I got them done, so not online, but the thing was that he had to cut the fittings off the old hoses so I guess he had no way of knowing the opposing orientation of both ends

You would need to take note of the orientation of the direction the fittings the hoses get connected to...to relate to the the person making up the hose assemblies...

I could be entirely wrong but I think the term "reusable" in reference to hydraulic fittings/connectors usually means compression (ferule) type fittings...they require no crimping press...

I thought he would do it as he had the old hoses complete, but he was in a big rush, with loads of customers waiting (including me), so I guess that bit got left out.
It's ok though, I think I have it sorted now.
The fittings seem to be in two parts, the top part with a long tapered thread and then a ferrule which I think goes over the top of the hose and the thread. So yes it sounds
like compression type. He said they need to heat up (by themselves) as you tighten them, otherwise they aren't re-usable any more.

There are reusable hose ends that are not crimped on. These are not real common but they are around. The outer sleeve is threaded over the hose and then the inner nipple is inserted and threaded into the outer shell. These are very nice when you are making hoses with elbows on both ends so taht you can adjust the phase angle to work with natural bend in the hose.

This link should be an example of reusable or field attachable hose ends
