I was a bit disappointed to see several students from a local school at an intersection that is very popular for groups to ask for donations. They were holding hand-made signs that all I could really tell was written on it was FFA (picture a piece of poster board with the letters FFA written in permanent marker). As a disclaimer, I was never in FFA, so I don't have the personal connection to offer as a grievance.

Personally I feel like asking for donations in this manner is not in line with the FFA's core values. My wife and I both agreed that we would not condone this form of fund raising with our own children, but would instead strive to instill the value of offering a service in exchange for money (i.e. link sale, car wash, etc.) We see it all the time with little league groups, dance studios, out of area churches (which are more often than not found out to be fraudulent)

I don't know if I decided to write this to vent or seek vindication, but I felt a group like FFA would be one of the last to condone 'handouts'.

Thoughts, grievances?

At the risk of this becoming a forbidden political thread, I'll say that I agree with you.

I bought a pair of FFA boots because they were 25% the price of tony llama boots! I guess that isn't giving a handout though! We always had to do fund raising in the boy scouts to go camping and what not. The only handouts we ever sought out were when we volunteered for the salvation army.

We did have a Mountain oyster fry once a year, but no begging. In fact, our VoAg instructor was so highly regarded for his service, the community all pitched in and bought him a new car to replace the one that he wore out making the rounds to help the farmers.

Just tried lamb fries for the first time out at Cattleman's in OKC a couple weeks ago! they were actually pretty good.

They are not bad. However, the best I have ever eaten were at the Big Texan in Amarillo. We NEVER go through Amarillo without stopping.

i think roadside fund raising is a traditional way for volunteer organizations to raise money...before interstates you would drive through towns and sometimes there would be some organization looking to collect money at the stoplight.

Well, they have a donation link right on their Home Page so I guess hanging out at intersections is no big deal to their core values. According to their website they rely on donations, to me that means a handout.

When I was in FFA we had fruit sales and sold picnic tables we made ect. I think it is a sign of the times. Everyone has their hand out, before long wally world will have a donation box at every entrance. FYI FFA started about 4 mi south of here in Wears Cave Va and has spread from here. I don't remember the year.
