My brother just picked up a Ferguson tractor. He was told it was a 1949 tractor at 29 HP. It is a 4 spd , starts with the gearshift, 4 cyl gas engine with what appears to be an external oil filter casing. how do we tell what model the tractor is? We cant find any numbering anywhere to help in identification.... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'll post some pictures soon, its in pretty nice shape, needs some work, and the sheet metal is bent up pretty good. Any idea where we can get parts (like headlights)? What type of oil for the engine and the transmission?

Thanks in advance!

There should be a plate just under the steering wheel on the dashboard with the serial number. If it is a 1949, then it's a TO-20, because they didn't make the T0-30 that early. And it should be a TO not a TE. TO stands for tractor overseas, TE stands for tractor England. If it was built in this country, it was a TO.

You'll probably also find that it is closer to 27 hp.. but everywhere you look the numbers vary a few hp +/-.

Those units are very similar to the ford N's, which used 30 wt engine oil ( originally non-detergent).. but many now use detergent oil.

As for the tranny.. I don't know what the fergies took.. but again, the N's used a 90wt mineral oil gl-1 ( not gear oil! ) ..which can still be had at TSC and wally-mart. Newer ford/NH specs also specify a 134d hydro/trans oil for the modern tractors.. it is a bit thinner.

Many also just use the universal hy-tran oil.. like the jd303--- or hygaurd equivalent.... But see if you can find what that fergie originally took...

I believe I & T makes a shop manual for the to- 20/30 series..

They are good manuals.. the I & T for the ford N' series is great.

Well I don't think you have a TO20. The TO20's had the oil filter inside the oil pan, there should be a big cap, where the drain plug would be. Now the TE20's had a deferent motor then the TO's, but I don't belive they were imported into the country. But I am sure some came over.

You may have a TEA-20. Try scratching the tranmission in an inconspicuous place. TEA"s had an aluminun transmission case. I think both TE and TO had cast steel. All early model TEA 20-80 had 6volt Pos grd elect. most later TEA 20-85's had 12volt Pos ground. Both models had external oil filter (sleeve) Engines were made by Standard Motor Co. of Coventry England. A lot of these tractor were imported into Canada many found there way into the Northern USA For serial No's look here http://www.mountvernon.net/tractor/sernum.htm
