Anyone know the properties of the engine head studs ? During torqueing headbolts two of them broke.Replaced and retoque ,all ok. Later during retorque head after 10 hour one of the headstud broke. Used a Snap-On torquemeter so it aint bad tools og to much force causing the studs braking...

I installed a new head gasket last year on my 1955 Ferguson TO-35. I just assumed that I should not torque the old head studs/nuts to the factory spec, since something was sure to break. As I recall, I subtracted about 12 ft.-lb. from the factory recommendation. After running the engine at idle for about 30 minutes, I retorqued the nuts , and reset the lash on all of the valves. I've found that, after a few years, the head bolt/nut torque may fall to about one half of the original torque but by that time there is enough carbon and other assorted deposits to keep the head gasket from blowing.
