Well, I think I have decided to buy a pony or mini-horse for my kids. The oldest is 2.5 yrs. What fence would you all suggest ? I was thinking at first of the wide white electric type, but now I am leaning towards the woven wire.
JD 8320 MFWD, JD 6415 MFWD, FEL, and cab, John Deere MFWD 4600, John Deere 4020, John Deere 4430, John Deere 455 mower, Deutz, and Gehl 4610 perkins skidsteer
I agree with Gator. I use 5 and 6 strand high tensile and electrify it. You will hear stories of horses getting hurt on it but horses get hurt on everything! Knock on wood I have never had a horse injured on it. I had a horse sunday go on a bucking spree and bucked right into the fence. Besides getting a couple nice shocks we just bounced right off of it.
Barbed wire
Anything the horse can get a hoof caught in
Anything that's a pain to maintain, e.g., painted board fences
Anything a horse can chew on (maintenance issue)
Anything a horse can lean on (maintenance issues)
Anything a horse can try to get under to reach the greener grass on the other side of the fence.
Anything that deteriorates when exposed to UV, e.g., some vinyl fences.
I like the look of a full wooden fence, but the way lumber has skyrocketed I think I will go electric too. I will just have to teach the boys not to touch!!
When using the wide white electric fence material, how far should the posts be spaced?
ALL DEPENDS on the material yer using for posts and the ground(if its level ) or not....send us a pic!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I put up 1200' of high-tensile fence along the front of my property two weekends ago. It is not electrified, and it is not to keep any animals in -- it is to keep people from driving their pickup trucks and jeeps from having fun on my land.

If they are old enough to understand the result, then there is no better lesson than to actually get zapped a couple times. Obviously, not a lesson for a 5 year old, but a 10-15 year old will get the idea /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.
I have actually grabbed our fence on purpose to demonstrate to friends and family that it is not dangerous.
