I converted my ford NAA to 12volts today, was all original, however generator wasn't charging. After a lot of thought I went 12volt, its a working field tractor and it just made sence, financially as well as functionally. It was the last 6volt system I had, now I will have extra parts on hand, when I need to buy them they are cheaper, boosting will be easier if necissary. I also went verttical exhaust while it was in the shop. I always worried about the exhaust dumping onto dry hay while raking. I put a lot of thought into it and I am pretty sure they were the right decisions however I feel like I did something wrong.

Being it's a working field tractor, I believe you made the right choice. Especially at hay time, you don't need to be working on it.

I still have 6 tractors on 6V systems. The biggest problem I have is with the V-Regs. Sure don't make them like they used to. Even the $70+ Echlins are lucky to last a year anymore. I have 1, Super C Farmall that the regulator ( Delco) was on the tractor when Dad bought it in '72, and was working. Still works to this day. Go figure...

You didn't do anything wrong in my opinion. I would have done the same thing as far as the 12 volt upgrade. Vertical exhaust is fine too.

My brother changed ours over years ago too. We don't have anything left with six volt.

There are probably as many 12v converted tractors out there as there are 6v, so no, I dont think you really did anything wrong. My only concern is always with the starter. If I remember correctly, the NAA is the same as the 8n in which the bendix pulls IN instead of out.

When we rebuilt dads 8n, we kept the 6v system for the fact that we broke the bendix off the starter more than once. And it aint no fun fishing parts out of the bellhousing:confused2: We figured it broke so oftem because before the rebuild, it was really hard to start(tired), and jumped it with 12v frequently. And 12v hits the bendix much harder than 6v

nothing wrong with 12v for the reasons mentioned. esier charging or jumping ( ifyou don't know how to jump 6v. etc.. )

however.. simply not charging may hav ebeen as easy as a gen needing polerization or a replacement vreg. easy to test :)

good luck.

ps.. my naa is 12v as well.

:)
