Feeder Pigs - Wanted (Southern Indiana)

Does anyone have any advice on who to purchase feeder pigs (50 - 80 lbs) in Southern Indiana or Western Kentucky. I'm Not really interested in purchasing from an auction. Hampshire or Berkshires would be nice, but would be interested in other breeds. I'm looking to purchase 2-3 pigs. Thanks!

There's some kind of hog disease going around currently. Supposed to be devistating to the herd. Might be hard to find someone willing to sell at this time. Good luck.

It's porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). I expect that buyers are cautious about buying feeder pigs for fear of introducing the virus to their farms.

The OP could post a want ad in Farm World ? weekly farm newspaper source for ag news, classifieds, auctions or other farm-related media outlets in Indiana.

Hampshires or Berkshires? Seldom hear of Berkshires, but that's what I raised and showed in the 4-H Club about 60 to 66 years ago.:laughing: There weren't that many Berkshires back then, either, which gave me an advantage; I didn't have as much competition as the guys who had Hampshires and some other breeds.

Might try contacting your county extension agent or the local farm bureau. If you have a Co-Op in your area they might know. Lots of hog farmers here. And some awful good food:

Yeah, that's the one. They're taking measures to try to prevent it going farm-to-farm. We took a tour of a massive hog farm this spring. Indoor operation. Lots of cleanliness going on.

The fair started August 1st. They're keeping a close eye on it.
It affects piglets, with 7,000,000 dead so far. That may be a reason its hard to find pigs to buy right now.
