Federal protection for Rattlesnakes?

Just heard on the news that the goverment is considering putting Diamond Backs on the endangered species list - to join my most favorite endangered species, the Gopher Turtle. Sorry, but when I see one here, my next move is for my SnakeTamer. I don't do that for the large population of the d@$m turtles we have out here, but at least all they do is make big holes in the fields I manage to find with the Tractor and mower.

It is illegal to kill ANY snake in Virginia, unless you are in imminent danger. Strange.

Forgot to add... I feel imminent danger when I pull onto the highway and go into the woods. I wear a SW 357 or Tarsus 45/410 revolver ( so I do not have to aim at close range) on my land. On the road I drive the biggest truck I can afford (Ford only:laughing

About 22 years ago, on our first visit to Arizona, I was surprised to find that 3 varieties of rattlesnake were protected by state law. Hard to believe, for me anyway.

Ya, I would rather be overrun with rodents than have a few snakes around.

Rattlers have been protected here in CT for some time now. We have a few areas where they're pretty dense and you're not allowed to bother them at all.

Snakes don't bother me, venomous or not. I relocate if I find them somewhere they don't belong, but will dispose of nuisance ones. But then I grew up in a house full of them, one of my brothers collected some weird pets. :laughing:

These laws were probably written by the lobbyists for snake oil salesmen to protect the snake oil sales

I'm kind of surprised by the reaction to a group of people who seem to enjoy and respect the outdoors so much. I am not very fond of snakes myself, but when I am mowing I always avoid them since they help keep the freaking field mice population under control, and I only have so many traps. The darned things make a mess of my house.
