I'm not the horse person in the family. My wife is. I'm just the one that helps care for them. She has had several flavors of horses over the years. I deal with the horses every day whether I want to or not. We're talking about horse temperament here. My favorite is a Warm Blood. A draft horse/thoroughbred mix. Second choice for me would be a quarter horse. The Arabs that we have had have always had a definite attitude problem. They get pissed off easily. The Thoroughbreds way too high strung. These darn things weigh a thousand pounds and are quick as a flash. Is there a breed of horse that you are most comfortable with?

temperment? give me a draft. course.. they are hard to feed, shoe and move.. so as a compromise.. a quarterhorse. I have minies as well.. they are headstrong and uppity.. ( IMHO )

Well, to start with, it's no wonder you had problems with your arabs, there's no such thing! They are Arabians! :D At least that's what i was told a woman that own two of them.

My favorite fun horse was one my Sister had, 1/2 quarter and 1/2 arab er i mean Arabian. She was a rocketship! Man oh man, she was well trained, steered by knee, massive acceleration, top end was out of sight, agile and stamina. Not a bad jumper to boot. Only things is you couldn't hardly get her to walk. Trot or canter was as slow as she would go, for miles and miles. My favorite work horse was Buck, a quarter horse, pretty good roping/cutting horse and very gentle he eventually developed "ring bone" and was retired. He loved to work the cows.

After 20 years of a Arab and a tbred, I really liked it when that tbred went down the road. A giant pia. I might move out if the wife got another horse.

I've always been partial to mules, particularly draft mules.

I grew up horseback. Rode every day, sometimes all day. Only way one could cover the country. Worked sheep, goats, cattle with them.

People want to know why I don't have a horse now. I tell them that first you get the horse, then you get to do fencing, water, build shed and cover, get tack, build tack shed, get horse trailer, get vehicle to pull trailer, change insurance, build more sheds, buy feed, buy hay, build more sheds, start rodent control program, visit vet regularly, then you can't leave home because need to feed and water horse, buy inclement weather clothing so you can take care of horse in any weather, purchase fly and parasite control supplies, visit doctor because you got bit, kicked or fell off...there's more, but y'all already know what they are....

That said, a quarter horse is my favorite. Mine were good for roping, riding all day in country no sane man would not walk thru, working cattle.

If you don't NEED to do these things to put food on the table, I tell people then you don't NEED a horse.

Nowdays, I holler, open the pen gate, shake a feed sack and stand back as all the cows crowd in. Shut gate. Beats all the above....

but wish I had a few thousand acres so I could NEED a horse:D

I have two "Canadian" Horses. For those that do not know the breed, they are small draft horses, generally all black. They stand about 16 hands and are very solid. They can be used for all disciplines.

My two guys do it all. English, Western riding, trail riding, work cattle, hi-line, pack and trailer like a dream. You can't ask for anything more. I really enjoy taking them on overnight trips with my friends.
