FarmPro 2420 Newbie - Can\'t get above 500 RPM\'s

I am a tractor newbie. Bought a barely used Farmpro 2420. One of the fuel hoses burst during Hurricane Wilma. I replaced the engine ran fine for about 15 minutes after mowing to the furthest point on my property i made a turn and the engine died. After that i could only get 500 rpms. it took about 30 minutes to get back to the garage. Replaced fuel filter drained fuel got it started back up but wouldn't get above 500 rpms. Any ideas?

Debri from old hose causing blockage?

Got good air intake? Got good fuel from tank? Can you get fuel to injector pump?

If you throttle up a diesel and get black smoke.. usually breathing problems.. if you throttle up under no load and get to rpm gainn.. usually fuel problems.. That could be debri.. bad pump.. bad injectors.. etc.

Checked the air intake - no problems. How would you tell if the pump is not working. I wouldn't think the injectors are plugged only has 30 hrs.

I wouldn't think they normaly would be plugged.. but no telling if the line popped.. Was this a non metalic line?

Are you sure you got all the air out of the injector lines? They could also be pluged, even at just 30 hours. That line failure and the subsequent parts replacement work and bleeding of the system could have broke loose some debris left over from the original chinese fuel.

How do you do this?
I basicly just used the hand pump and got the fuel to flow this way. Is this a problem? Can any diesel mechianic figure this out? or Should i take it to a Jinma Farmpro dealer.

The injectors spray fuel into the cylinders when the injector pump exceeds the firing pressure of the injector. If there is air in the lines between the injector and the pump, this air compresses and absorbes the pressure that is supposed to fire the injector. Here is a link to one of the previous threads on how to bleed the air out of the system. Any diesel mechanic should also be able to do this.

Check to be sure you have good flow to the primary pump. To do this turn off the fuel at the sediment bowl. Remove the banjo bolt at the bottom of the hand pump. Inside this bolt is a thimble type screen, clean it. now open the valve on teh sediment bowl till you get a good flow, remember this "open position". reconnect, pump and then put the valve to the same open position. you should have good flow.

If you think you have air, there are bleeder valves on the head of the inj pump (has a ring through it so you don't need tool to open it, open and pump till no bubles. also top of fuel fitler has a bleeder, open and pump till no bubbles.

If still not running right, crack open each hard line at each (2?) injector while the engine is running, you should see some fuel dribble out. when you tighten back up, the cylinder should fire again.

Re: FarmPro 2420 Newbie - Can\'t get above 500 RPM\'s

Probably not a good idea to make this any more difficult that it needs to be. Taking off from Chip's suggestions, make sure your fuel cutoff valve at the sediment bowl is opened to permit maximum fuel flow.

Next, there are two fuel screens that are typically problematic with these Jinmas. The easiest one to get to is at the input to the fuel pump. Follow the rubber hose down from the sediment bowl to the banjo fitting that connects to the fuel pump. It's a round looking thing at the end of the rubber hose that's fastened to the fuel pump with kinda of a big looking hex head bolt. First shut off the fuel with the sediment bowl cutoff valve. Once the bolt is backed off and you've got the fitting in your hand, there should be a very fine round screen in the middle. Often you only need to clean that screen and reassemble.

If that doesn't do the job, there's another screen inside the fuel tank. Unfortunately, that means draining the fuel tank to get to it. Drain it with the flexible hose that you previously disconnected from the fuel pump. The sediment bowl is connected to the fuel tank by a threaded pipe. Use an open end wrench to back out the threaded pipe from the fuel tank. The screen will come out with the pipe. Clean/replace as required, then reassemble.

Unfortunately, all this may get air into your injection lines. But we'll have to cross that bridge if/when you get to it.
