Hi All,

I'm new here so treat me gently. Great looking forum.

I have a Farmliner 445DTC and due to a lapse in concentration I drove off with the hand brake/transmission brake engaged.

I believe that something has let go or dislodged in the gearbox for the front axle drive/transmission brake which has allowed the drive shaft to get pushed forward out of the gearbox by about 1 INCH/2 CM. The drive shaft exits a transfer case mounted under the main gearbox and is used to select drive to the front axle and also has the transmission brake.

So I now have a tractor in the middle of the paddock with all the gearbox trans/hydraulic fluid emptied on the ground (no hydraulics for the linkage or bucket) and would like to know if anyone has any experience or knowledge of fixing this displaced drive shaft problem and what I need to do to rectify/repair the problem.

Sorry I don't have any pics.

Any help or information appreciated. My other concern, looking at the bolt heads is that there is not enough room for a socket wrench or ring spanner, only an open ended spanner will fit I hope I don't round off the bolts!!

Thanks
Alan

I've never heard of a farmliner but the 445dtc sounds like a rebranded fiat.

Just a guess but I suspect the bearings have failed in the transfer case, or worse the case is broken.

Hi Winmac,
Spot on, it is a rebranded Fiat made in Romania.

Pulled the magnetic drain plug, and there pieces of a circlip on it. So it looks like a bearing retention circlip has broken and allowed the shaft to shift forward.
Will try and get the transfer box off and see how much destruction awaits.
Thanks for your response.

We had the misfortune of owning one of these, albeit with the side mounted transfer case. It had extensive 4wd drive issues and we ended up pulling the t-case, blanking it and ran it as 2wd because the repair parts were more than the tractor was worth.

Are you making any progress?

Hi,
A major struggle to get the transfer box free from the transmission, it was glued on with some type of liquid gasket material. It only came free with the help of some ingenuity and brute force.

The rest of the internals look ok, but I have sent the unit off to a service and repair shop that has worked on these Farmliners for many years, Kyogle Tractors. Great help over the phone gave me the full removal advice including that it would possibly be stuck onto the main gearbox!

There are just too many bits in there for me to consider doing the teardown and rebuild myself, the transmission brake, think three tiny disc brakes and associated operating mechanism plus the selection mechanism for the transfer gear engagement. I'd get it disassembled but I'd never get it back together!

Just waiting now to hear if there is any other damaged components or if they just need to do the circlip and front seal. Finger crossed.

My (uneducated) OPINION is that a design that self destructs if you leave the park brake engaged is just crazy bad engineering!

Sure hope you don't loose your shirt on the repairs.

HI Blow hard,
I was wondering if you had any success with your transmission repair?
