Can anyone provide info on a Farmall Cub. I do not know what year is is. It has a belly mower and various gardening attachments. The asking price is $3100. I have not seen it yet but plan to check it out this weekend. What should I look for to help determine if it is mechanically sound? What would be a fair price ?
Thanks for you feedback.

For 3100 it should have hydraulics, and be in really good condition. One of the biggest problems with these tractors is they don't have live PTO the other is on a 60" mower they are a little lite on Horsepower.

$3100 is definitely high. I sold a 48 model Cub with with hydraulics, 4' mower, dirt scoop, and a few other gadgets that was in good running condition for $2300 last year. I got 10 years of use out of it and sold it for more than I had in it. At least in Georgia, the prices go up in spring when it is time to cut grass and then head down in fall.

I forgot to mention a few things you could check. Make sure there isn't too much play in the steering. You'll end up steering the tractor with the brakes, but good steering will help prevent you from slicing up the lawn during sharp turns. Make sure the brakes slow you down a bit. The hydraulics should easily lift the belly mower, but if you stand on the belly mower can they still lift it? (Obviously not a trick to try while in motion!)

Roy,
If you could find out the year or the serial number that would be a great help, for there were to different horse power rating on the cubs.

Yes indeed check the streering and listen as it runs, also try all the gears.
A good Farmall Cub up in these parts can start $2.500.oo and I seen them go as high as $4.100.oo /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif but thats in darn good shape.
The mower I would check as any mower parts.

Parts still can be purchase at the older auto parts stores.

And another nice little tractor would be the JD L & LA. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Thanks for all the replies. I knew I could count on some good advice from this forum. I will be sure to check for these things and also try to get the serial number. I don't think the seller has anyone else looking at it so I will not have to make an immediate decision. I have a JD5210 and am looking for a small tractor that my wife can use for mowing around the house and for the garden so there may be some possibilities other that the Cub.
Thanks again

whats the verdict??? did you get the cub??? the one i had years ago had a bad thrust bearing in the steering, made it pretty hard to turn the sterring wheel..other than that it was a good mowing machine

heehaw, no, I did not get the tractor. I discussed it with my brother-in-law who knows a lot more about tractors than I do and he talked me into not buying it. It really wasn't what I wanted so it did not take much convincing on his part. I think I will just stick with what I have. I have the JD 5210, Troy Horse tiller, and a riding lawnmower so I think I can get by with them and put that money into the barn that we are building. Thanks for you follow up.

I had a Farmall Cub for 10 years. If the machine is in Snow counrty check the Radiator Support Housing for cracks. Also on the Distributor/Magneto side of the machine check for cracks around the block where the radiator hose goes back to the radiator support housing.

If you are looking for an older machine to mow with look for a Cub Lowboy 154 with a hydro. These things are like garden tractors on Steriods. They mow very well... Better that the Farmall and they have more HP. Most Cubs have 13 hp. Thats Drawbar HP..

Good Luck...
