I'm looking at a ih756 gas, it seems to have what would appeear to be oil blow by. Is this something that is common? Should it be a deal breaking with the tractor, as all seems to be very good with it other that this concern?

You left so much open! what hitch? Two remotes? Wide Front? Condition other then engine? Tires? TA?

A lot of these tractors never got many hours maybe about 3500! To think that they thought gas was expensive then!!!!

Many have been converted to Cummins 5.9 to finish there lives in style and power!

wide front, shows 4700hrs and tach is currently working, good tred on the tires, 2 remotes, tin is in good condition repainted a couple of years ago is good not great, new ignition parts installed, TA good. It fired up without issue in 15 degree weather and it was not warm to the touch prior to this, 3 point works well. Again, all in all it is a pretty solid unit, with the only concern being previously mentioned.

My concern would be the 5-6 gallons of gas per hour it will take to feed it at full power.

To have some blow by is not bad although it is a good bargining chip for a purchaser!

It certainly doesn't have many hours on it for it's vintage. Probably because of the fuel it would burn under heavy use. They did start well when cold and depending on use there still might be more years on the engine. The breather just having a bit of haze coming out of it when cold means it might be a full stream under heavy use, is there any signs of oil in the tube?

First of all thank you for the responses.
Art, I do not know the answer to that question. I will have to check it out.

As for the fuel consumption, it is a concern but I think that it is common with all tractors of any size and HP.
柊ccording to the Nebraska Test Data the 706 (756 not tested) has max hp of 73.82, using 5.7 gal per hr at max hp.
柊 JD 3020 gas would have 70.59 max hp and fuel usage rate of 6.6 gal per hr.
漂our Oliver 660 would claim 67.23 max hp with a 4.8 gal per hr usage.

It is certainly known that the diesel would perform better in this category, but I like the simplicity of the gas engine and the reliability in cold weather starting.

the blow by really isnt to much of an issue.an the IH 756 is a good mid range tractor.being a gas burner you should be able to get it for under $5000.

That's also why these older, larger gas tractors are often well-preserved. Nobody could afford to wear them out even with 50 cent gas. Most 756 Diesels you will find have 2-3 times the hours on them.

At 4500 hours, if it hasn't had an overhaul, it is closer to needing one than the rest of these guys realize and excessive blowby can be an indicator. It is, after all, your dime.

No pics as of yet because still trying to decide. This leads me to my next question. What are the differences in the 706 and 756, other than the engine size?
