I have just bought a 197? Farmall 140. It cranks and runs good. However, when I start up a hill or first put a load on the motor, the motor will have a quick short burst of power. I would think the governor should bring the power on a little smoother and hold it a little longer. Is there an adjustment to set how quick the governor respones to a load ?

On the left side, you will see the throttle linkage from the gov. rockshaft arm to the carb. Remove the cotter pin, from the pin the connects the clevis to the rockshaft arm, and slip the pin out.

Set the hand throttle to wide open position.

Go back to the left side, while pushing back on the linkage attached to the carb. as far as it will go, you need to adjust the clevis so the pin slides through both the clevis, and rockshaft arm smoothly. If the clevis needs moved, you'll need to unlock the lock nut, so as to turn the clevis. Install cotter pin, and start it up, and see if that solved the problem.

If not, you'll probably need to take a look at the governor itself. Could be a fly weight sticking, bad thrust bearing, etc.

Thank you very much. I'll make the adjustments and hopefully that will take care of the problem.
I don't have any manuals for this tractor. Is Amazon a good place to shop for a manual ? I've heard Tractor Supply has some, too.
Do you think I need an owners manual ? Or, would I be better off with a Service / Repair manual ?
Again, thank you for your help.

Tractor Supply shows they carry them. They may not be in stock, but can order them. The I&T manuals have a lot to be desired, but get you through most repairs, and have most specifications as far as torque setting, tune-up specs etc. Look to run $32.99 there. The manual you would need is the I&T IH-201.

The IH Blue Ribbon manuals are best by far, but are segment specific, such as wiring, transmission, engine, etc, etc, by separate manual. The full set will nearly, if not completely fill a loose leaf binder.

There are some OEM Blue Ribbon Op. manuals on Ebay right now, for less than $20.

If you need to look up parts, click on this link: Official Case IH Online Parts Store and Case IH Catalog for Best Parts Search and Best Parts Look Up. Case IH Parts for Case IH Tractors, Case IH Combines, Case IH Tractors, Case IH Manuals, Case IH Parts It's to the Case/IH online parts store. I've already drilled down through the menu, and got you to the pages for the 140. Select a segment of your tractor, and click on it, and an exploded view of it will appear, along with the part number, and description to the right.

Or, you can go to Messicks: Home | Messick's Same exploded views, but they show parts prices. Handy if your shopping for aftermarket parts to compare, or looking for used parts. Copy and paste the part numbers to Google, NAPA, to compare prices.
